Japan's Population

About 125 million people live in Japan, making it the world’s 8th largest nation in population. During the years1870-1970, Japan’s population more than tripled. It increased from about 30 million to more than 100 million. Since 1970 however a low birth rate has slowed the population growth, which now averages less than 1 % a year.

Japan is one of the world’s most densely populated countries. Parts of Japan are very crowded because everyone is not evenly distributed throughout the country.. About 90% of the people live on coastal plains, which make up only about 20% of Japan’s territory. These plains rank among the most thickly populated places on earth.

Millions of people live in the big cities along Japan’s coast. About 8 million people live in Tokyo, the countries largest city. Tokyo has an average of about 36 thousand people per square mile. Japan also has ten other cities with populations of a million or more.
