Aland - Land for Waters
The province of Aland is an
autonomous demilitarized group of islands, situated in the Baltic Sea between Finland and
Sweden. In 1921 Aland became independent from Finland and since 1954 Aland has had its own
flag. Aland has now a population of 25,000 and a unique archipelago with more than 6,500
islands. The province of Aland took over the Aland postal service from Finland in 1993.
This makes the postal service on Aland the youngest and smallest in Scandinavia with only
21 post offices. In 1984, Aland issued its first postage stamps. It is better known
as "Land for Waters".
