Submitting Character Biographies Here is a simple biography format for you to follow for your character. Your character can be a maiko, geisha, a beginner to the Flower and Willow world, a customer or even the son of a geisha who has to put up with a community full of women. Name: [Character Name. As well, include their geimyo (professional name) if they are already a maiko or geisha.] E-mail: [I'd like your main e-mail address to be included so I can contact you easily.] Age and Appearance: [age, hair, eyes, body type, height, special characteristics, anything you want to put in here] History: [Where your character grew up--what class were they, what was their life like, etc] Personality: [Please describe your character's personality and interests]
Please post your bio on the Biography Board.
Guidelines I also ask, for realism purposes, people follow a couple certain guidelines when submitting their bios. 1) Skills. Most girls joining the karyukai (Flower and Willow World) are not previously well trained in dancing or traditional arts of sorts, though some certainly may have previous experience with them. Most likely the only girls who would be really skilled in these various arts are those who are the daughters of current or previous geisha. So your character, if coming from an outside background, should be (fairly) a beginner to the arts when entering this world. This doesn't mean your character could not have taken traditional dance lessons for a couple previous years--just remember this doesn't make her a professional and she'll need guidance just like anyone else. Please read Avoiding Godmoding in the Role-playing Advice section. 2) Special Characteristics. Green, hazel or blue eyes? A great majority Japanese have dark brown eyes, and only those with a mixed background (half Japanese and half European, for example) would have eyes of a different color. If you really want your character to have, say, blue eyes, then they are not fully Japanese. I do not wish for a whole bunch of "Sayuri" characters here who for some unexplained reason had blue eyes even though she was supposed to be fully Japanese. As well, it might be easier to play a full Japanese character as we still don't quite know how the karyukai would feel about allowing someone into their world who is not of full Japanese heritage. However, there are a couple of not-fully Japanese maiko here already, so most likely I will not allow any more (you can try to e-mail me on it though or post on the boards). If you want a special characteristic of some sort try to be creative with it but also realistic. As an example, a character in the movie Maiko-haaaan!!! had a scar on her forehead. 3) Why? You should ask yourself why your character is treading the path they are. Girls become maiko or geisha for different reasons--most have seen maiko and were taken in awe by how they looked, with an interest since then of becoming maiko themselves. Others have genuine interest in the arts like dancing or playing shamisen or with an interest in kimono and would like to further their knowledge and skills. Or maybe their mother was a former geisha. Business men may come to get rid of the stress from their job or maybe their family has been attending geisha parties (ozashiki) for generations. A customer might even come trying to win the heart of a geiko who has no plans of leaving the karyukai.
