 Select from the following activities and write about them in your journal.  Decide who will be responsible for the different projects among yourselves and report to me no later than May 10.

P.S.  I would like you to finish this book and all projects by May 31, so you will be prepared the last week of school to share your finished projects with the entire class.

Chapter 1 & 2

How did Matt feel about being left alone? Describe how you would feel about being left alone if you were in Matt's place. What would you need to know in order to survive in the woods alone?

Chapter 3 & 4

Predict how Matt will survive without his rifle. How will he get food for himself? How will he protect himself?

 

Chapter 5 & 6

How did the Saknis and Attean take care of Matt? When has someone come to your rescue?

 

Chapter 7, 8 & 9

Discuss differences between Attean and Matt.

 

Chapter 10 & 11

1. Discuss signs and symbols that are important to the Indians.

2. There are some similarities between Matt and the story of Robinson Crusoe. Write about the differences and how Attean and Matt have reversed some of these roles.

 

Chapter 12, 13 & 14

How did Matt's values conflict with Attean's in the fox incident? Has this ever happened to you? What did you do?

 

Chapter 15 &16

Talk about superstitions and how they affect people today. Brainstorm some that you know about. How was The Beaver Clan superstitious? What superstitions were part of this Indian celebration? Are there any superstitions that your family upholds during celebrations?

 

Chapter 17 & 18

1. After studying the events that have taken place thus far, construct a newspaper that might be seen in a town nearby. Study newspaper layouts and choose which layout they want to use. Select several major events that might be written about. Add headlines, human interest stories, comic strips, cartoons and weather maps.

2. Matt got a good look at the Indian village in the daylight. Draw your own Indian village or draw the Beaver Clan's village.

 

Chapter 19 & 20

1. Make a game. The Indian game that is described in these chapters describes how these boys made something entertaining out of what little they had. Make your own Indian game or interpret the one described in the chapter. Share game with others.

2. What can you tell about the role of women in the Indian village? How are these roles different in Matt's culture?

3. Compare Matt's cultural views on things and Attean's cultural views on things.

 

Chapter 21 & 22

1. Predict what Matt will do. Will he go with Attean or stay and wait for his family? What would you do?

2. Matt gave Attean his most prized possession - the watch. Write about your own prized possession and who would you give it to and why?

 

Chapter 23, 24 & 25

Tell the stories of all the adventures Matt went through to your classmates.
