Dear Parents:

My name is Robert Ferguson, and I will be your child’s fourth grade teacher this year.  Because I will be spending several hours each day with your child, I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself.

I have been an educator in Bradford for 24 years.  Prior to that I worked in business and industry for six years, and I also taught six years at Northern Potter.  I earned my B.S. and M.Ed. degrees at Mansfield University and received my doctorate degree from LaSalle University.  I am married and have two sons, who are both grown.  My wife, Sally, is a certified teacher also.

My favorite hobbies are reading and playing chess.  I run the chess club at School Street and hope to see some of you there!  I also serve on the national scholastic board for the U.S. Chess Federation to help expand chess programs.  My love of chess has led to traveling around the country with my students.  Bradford’s chess teams have finished first in more than a dozen state championships and as high as fifth place at nationals.  Another hobby I enjoy is writing.  I have written a few chess books, as well as books on other topics.

Teaching is more to me than just a job.  It is a commitment I take seriously.  My mission as a teacher is to dedicate myself to helping your child reach his or her full potential this year.  I hold high expectations for your child, and I will do what I can to help him or her meet those expectations.

My teaching philosophy is this: I don’t simply teach subjects.  I teach students—I teach your child.  I am dedicated to helping each student develop thinking skills, self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, the ability to work independently, and a feeling of success.  Your child deserves my respect and understanding, and I will strive to give this to him or her.  In return I expect cooperation and respect from your child.

I look forward to an exciting and productive year.  You will be hearing from me on a regular basis because you are the most important person in your child’s life, and your involvement and support mean a great deal.  I prefer to communicate by email, so please send me an email at [email protected] and let me know about any special requests.  In the meantime, please visit my school website at http://go.to/Dr.Ferguson for additional information like what assignments your child has.

Sincerely,

Robert Ferguson, Ed.D.
