FALLS, CAVES, AND HIKES There are incredible things to see and do everywhere on Havasupai Indian Reservation. The crowning glory of this land are its many waterfalls; they are among the most beautiful and most photographed waterfalls in all the world. Travelers can swim in turquoise-colored waters at Navajo, Havasu, Mooney and Beaver Falls. The unique color of the water is due to high amounts of lime, or travertine. Deposits of this mineral create the almost eerie looking curtains which surround the falls. Caves are numerous in the high canyon walls. Mining existed here in the past, but recently the Havasupai have forbidden any future mining. There are small caves to explore where halite crystals can be found, discarded by miners searching for silver and other valuables. Hikes are one-way here. The canyon is long, and there is really only one way to go. The best trail I have ever been on in my life is the trail to the Colorado River, about 16 miles round-trip. There is also a trail which scales the high cliffs and emerges on the rim of the canyon. |
