According to Edith Luther (Dec. 1994 conversation), Maria (she was known by Mary in the USA at least) worked as a nurse in St. Peter, MN, but contracted TB there. So she couldn't work as a nurse anymore and bought a condominium in Minneapolis. While there, she made beautiful stuffed animals which were given to a catholic charity to sell. Edith said she played with some of Maria's stuffed animal creations as a child but doesn't have any nice ones left because they were played with, not kept nice. When Maria died, her daughter Marian Stone was raised by Marian's grandma Agnes Blaha and then Ludwig Karl Heger and Margaret Blaha Heger. Marian is listed as living with the Heger family in the 1920 census, so apparently, Maria was too ill to have a little daughter living with her at that point.
