1. Record something from the book that interests you or puzzles you.
This may be something someone says, a conversation between two people, a single
sentence or a portion of a paragraph.  Copy the passage exactly as it is written.
Remember to cite the page number of the passage.

2. Write a
personal response
In your personal response, you should explain your reaction to or feelings about the
passage.  Perhaps you identify with the character in the situation.  Maybe you feel
a strong emotional response to the situation.
You cannot be wrong in this portion of the assignment because there are an infinite
number of responses to any piece of writing.  Just be sure to explain your reaction
     thoroughly.
The length should be a minimum of one developed paragraph.

3. Next, write an
analytical response to the passage.
To do this, closely examine the text and consider its significance.
-Are there any interesting images or metaphors?
-Does the passage reveal an important aspect of a character or mark a change in
          a character?
-Is the character realizing something new?
-Does the passage point to a particular theme?
         -Is there foreshadowing or irony?
-Is figurative language used?  If so, what effect is created?
In this section, you are aiming for the best possible interpretation of your chosen
lines.  Think deeply and take risks.  Just be sure to connect your interpretation
directly to the text.  The length should be a minimum of one developed paragraph.
