Writing Assignment #5

Memory Paper
Describe a memory as completely as you can
Think:  whats the first thing you ever remember?
What is something you will never forget?
  An accident?
  A surprise?
  Something that was new?
  Something familiar and comforting?
Try this:
1. Brainstorm smells, sights, touch sensations, sounds, voices, tastes.
2. Dont step too far outside the moment with analysis of what happened later or what it meant.  Try to stay in the moment, as much as you can.
3. Tell it in present tense as if everything is happening right now write it in the moment.

Have fun!

Type it and print it then send it to my email address.
On October 11th, we will be editing this in class and you can make changes on my computer and then print out a final draft.

Writing Assignment #9

Satire Paper
Using the article,
How Not to be a Successful College Student, create a satire essay with the topic of your choice.  Be very creative and funny.  Make sure that your story has a sequence and is detailed.

Writing Assignment #10

Definition Essay
In this essay, you will write about whatever it is that you are an expert on.  This may be big or small - but you want something you know well enough to get very detailed about.  You will define something that is not easy to define, something that cannot be defined just by looking it up in a dictionary.  It has to be defined through personal experience.  So, this is an indirect kind of personal essay.
Some examples of topics include:
What is the perfect boyfriend
What is the perfect oldest child
What is the worst enemy
What is friendship
What is courage
What is true love
What is the problem
What is a senior
What does it mean to be a __________
What is beauty

*When you write, make sure you have an audience in your mind that NEEDS to hear this definition.
*Your purpose in the definition essay is to convince the audience that your definition of this thing is CORRECT - irrefutable, in fact
*Use ethos (authority): be sure that it's clear to the reader that you have experience in this matter and should be listened to - that you are an authority.
*Use pathos (emotion): paint vivid pictures in the essay that convince the reader that this is indeed true.....that this is the definition of (whatever).
*Use logos (logic), where needed.  Be logical, where it makes sense.
