History Excerpts
- 1907 "Joint meeting with the active chapter have been held once a month at the homes of the various 'Old Dames,' and the business meeting of the Association occur every two weeks. On account of some 'stunts' at college, reunion has been postponed until after Easter vacation."
- 1917 "The last gathering of Psi Omicron before the member separated for the summer was the annual June meeting which is usually in the form of a banquet. This year, however, in view of the calls for relief on every hand, we decided to have a simple supper and turn the surplus money over to charitable relief. About fifty alumnae and active girls went out to the country home of Mary Field Sadtler, where, of course, we had a delightful time."
- 1927 "We want to tell you of the three Murdock sister, Delta Gammas from Psi [sic]Goucher chapter, who for many years have been doing wonderful work in China. Mary Cole Murdock is the regular missionary doing industrial work with the girls of the station; Agnes is a physician and surgeon, a graduate of Johns Hopkins Medical School, and is head of the Women's Hospital; Margaret is a graduate nurse and is head nurse of the hopsital and head of the nurse's training school. The station is Hwai-Yuen, in the province of Anhwei. These sisters have done so much for the people near them and have become so well loved that even though in the Nanking section and in the midst of hostilities they were promised protection by the Chinese official and were begged not to leave. However, the American consul, fearing for the lives of the missionaries, ordered them to leave. They are now in Edinburgh, Scotland, with another sister, Charlotte Murdock Young, sho until the death of her husband about five years ago, was also a missionary in China."
- 1937 "Whether the new rooms are responsible for the success of the actives in rushing season, we do not know, but we are sure they were a big asset. They are so cheerful, roomy, comfortable, and good looking. The alumnae chapter took charge of the city party this year, and a most successful one it was. It was held at the home of Mrs. Harvey Beck in Guilford."
- 1947 "In November, the Baltimore Alumnae met at eh home of the Murdock's. After the regular meeting a Chinese auction was held which netted twenty dollars for the Fraternity project."
- 1957 "Baltimore Delta Gammas offer varied ideas for chapter philanthropies - Christmas party at Maryland School for the Blind, sponsor of downtown business luncheon at Old St. Paul's Church (Frances Young, chairman), and support of the Margaret Newcomer House for women who are blind. The fourth and newest project was and annual card party with proceeds divided between aid to the blind project and the building fund of Beta Sigma, University of Maryland."
- 1967 "The Ruth French Shriver scholarship was awarded to two outstanding seniors at the Maryland School for the Blind in the amount of $50 each, and at Christmas, chairman Ruth Neal Leckie, Psi-Goucher, used $75 to present gifts to the blind in various hospitals. Each summer alumnae give camperships to needy blind children. Last summer they awarded $400 for camper needs to be used at the discretion of the School for the Blind director. The group presented a tandem bike to a Baltimore police officer who lost his sight in the line of duty."
- 1977 "Baltimore Alumnae's annual membership dinner was held at the home of Martha Wickes McKeever, Beta Alpha-McGill. Mary Dansberger Phillips, Beta Sigma-Maryland, presented the programs for the year. Among the planned programs were ones on microwave cooking and plants."
- 1987 "The Baltimore Alumnae Chapter started the 1986-87 year with a Texas barbecue/Convention report with everyone dressed cowboy style. The chapter contributed to many funds, including $515 to the senior scholarship in memory of Jane Teimeyer Francis, Beta Sigma-Maryland, $500 to the Maryland Society to Prevent Blindness, and $500 to the ophthalmology department at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. The group is selling Christmas cards again to raise more money which will be donated to another worthy cause. In addition, the chapter is also planning its second annual Eye-Robathon (dance for sight) with the R.P. Foundation."
- 1997 "We again celebrated Founders Day with the Beta Lambda Chapter from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Donations were made to the Delta Gamma Foundation and the Bates Middle School."
