The Beginning of the Second Century

Althea Hardman, Chapter President

I am excited to be welcoming you to a new year - the beginning of our second century as a chapter. We have a new group of officers - many of whom are new, young, and enthusiastic. I feel we are very blessed to have such a diverse group in our chapter, and we have been working hard to put together a year of programs to meet the interests of all.

Delta Gamma is now transitioning from a Province to a Regional Organization. Delta Gamma Fraternity is no longer divided into 18 Provinces. We are now divided into 8 Regions throughout the U.S. and Canada. We are part of Region 2 that includes: Delaware, Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Our Regional Director is Beth Searcy from NC. Under Beth are 3 Regional Specialists for the Collegians (Rachel Bishop, Christine Boring, and Carrie Gray), 2 Regional Specialists for the Alums (Celeste Viscardi and Jane Lynn), and 1 Housing Director (Molly McKay).

In April of this year Melissa Davis and Jane Lynn attended a regional workshop in Charlotte, NC, and brought back many good ideas and information on how the new structure will enhance the international fraternity.

To this end, while we can be proud of the financial support we have contributed to Foundation, we should also examine how we can actively participate in the delivery of services to sight conservation projects in the Baltimore area.

We welcome your thoughts and suggestions and encourage you to contact any Executive Board member, or better yet, bring your ideas to the September 19th Luau - ALOHA!

At the Yard

The Baltimore and Washington, DC alums and their friends and family had a fun Sunday afternoon on August 12th at Camden yards cheering for the Orioles. Unfortunately our cheers didn't help the O's with the final score being in favor of the Red Sox's. We were lucky that the weather held out for us and it is always fun to get together. Thanks to Kirsten Lavin and Jan Spigler for getting the tickets for us.

Gibson Island Luncheon

The Baltimore Chapter wants to be sure to thank Sue Tray and Harriett Whate for co-hosting a lovely luncheon on August 14th for the Senior Alum at the Gibson Island Country Club. Over 25 alums attended from as far away as Ohio! Everyone met at Sue Tray's new home for a social hour and journeyed together to the clubhouse for a delicious lunch and memorable afternoon with friends.

Entertainment Books are Here!

Great times and great savings for you. The book is only $25.00 and will save you many times that amount by using just a few of the hundreds of coupons and discounts in it. Delta Gamma gets $5.00 on every book we sell. That gives us money to donate for a scholarship or other foundation project as well as for chapter expenses.

Please try to sell several books. Now is the time to ask friends to buy - before the schools and other groups get their acts together! The books make good gifts especially for those who are hard to shop for. The holidays are just around the corner. Books are available, at various prices, for cities all over the country. Check www.entertainment.com for updates and additions throughout the year. Use our group # 516816 if you order on-line so we will get credit for the sale. Books are available from Jane Lynn. Start using those coupons today!

University of Maryland Needs You!

The Beta Sigma's at the University of Maryland, College Park campus are in need of advisors. Won't you consider being on? Call Beta Sigma graduate, Melissa Davis, and find out how you can help.

Eye Problems from Non-Eye Drugs

Many medications can affect the eyes. Especially common: any corticosteriod - drugs ending in "sone," such as prednisone, cortisone, and dexamethasone. They're prescribed for emphysema, arthritis, and a wide range of other diseases. When taken over the course of several months, these drugs can cause cataracts and glaucoma.

Whenever given a new prescription to take for more than a month or two, educate yourself. Read the list of potential side effects in the patient information pamphlet and ask your pharmacist whether the drug could affect your eyes. If so, you may want to be under an ophthalmologist's care while taking the drug.
