| The Holy Spirit is probably one of the most neglected subjects of study in theology today, at least for most people. This may not necessarily be solely out of neglect. For the Holy Spirit, by its very nature, points not to itself, but to Christ, and to God the Father. It is a "kenotic" person in this way. Having conceded that point, though, I believe that the Holy Spirit should be a focus of renewed study within the church. For the Holy Spirit stands at the heart of what it means to be a Christian, what it means to be a Church, and even what it means to know God the Father and Christ Jesus the Son. Here I have concentrated my reflections on the Holy Spirit into three areas. First, is a brief survey of the Biblical material relating to "Spirit" and the "Holy Spirit." Second, we turn to the relationship of the Spirit to forgiveness, and to the Christian life, through a reflection on the sacraments. Finally, we culminate this study with a look at the Holy Spirit as one person of the Trinity, and what this means as the Spirit constitutes the body of Christ as Church in this Trinitarian image. |

| Here we begin our investigation into the Holy Spirit by looking to the Bible to provide the foundation for our understandings. This proves to be especially important in this area in forming our understandings because of the variety and breadth of the Scriptural references to "Spirit" and "Holy Spirit" in both the Old and New Testaments. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in the Christian life, and one theme that helps to further our investigation is that of forgiveness. We look especially at the sacraments, for they have been one important traditional location of the Spirit's activity, and also prove to be a fruitful place to start in understanding where and how the Holy Spirit can be understood to act. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Our developing picture of the Holy Spirit places this person of the Trinity in the center of our understanding of the Christian life. Here, we elaborate on that understanding by looking at the Spirit and the church. This takes the form of looking at how the Spirit constitutes the church, and in understanding the church as a Triune community that mirrors the Triune life of God. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
