| Soren Kierkegaard is at once one of the most difficult and one of the most rewarding authors I have read. He is deeply insightful, and his work reflects a deep committment to Jesus Christ. While he is considered the father of modern day existentialism, he was also a staunch defender of the faith, against among other things the state church of his day. I certainly do not consider myself an expert on his writings, for my own studies are just scratching the survace of his brilliance, and I feel that I must read his books many times over to truly grasp his meanings. Yet, from the books and excerpts I have read, I have been influenced by his penetrating understanding of the human condition, of the nature of faith, and of the love of Jesus Christ. One of the most insightful parts of Kierkegaard that I have read and been influenced by is his parable of the king and the maiden, from his book Philosophical Fragments (it can also be found, if you prefer, in the book Parables of Kierkegaard, edited by Thomas Oden). In it he gives an extremely penetrating and vivid portrayal of the incarnation of Christ as a genuine humbling, even as the divinity is maintained. |

| "...What good would it do me to be able to explain the meaning of Christianity if it had no deeper significance for me and for my life; what good would it do me if truth stood before me, cold and naked, not caring whether I recognized her or not, and producing in me a shudder of fear rather than a trusting devotion? I certainly do not deny that I still recognize an imperative of understanding and that through it one can work upon men, but it must be taken up into my life, and that is whatI now recognize as the most important thing." | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
