Demon Hunter X
The rain continued hard that night 10 years ago. Shiro's strength neared its end as he backed up along the ledge; the child at his hip shuddering, still terrified. Shiro had failed to arrive in time to save the little girl's family, she was all that was left and he would be damned if he would lose her too.
"Its ok little one. It will be over soon."
A false smile given to the child to console her was all Shiro could do. The next instant the girl's scream shook the night air as their pursuer ripped through the side of the building. Its clawed hands slid along the steel and glass destroying all it touched, the blood of its last victim still fresh on its maw.
"You have failed Shih, the girl will die with you. No more will her bloodline live in insult to me."
His eyes narrowed as Shiro merely steeled himself, looking around for just a moment, then back to the creature.
"No Wan Kuei, you return to the Hells with your next step."
The thing chuckled, launching itself at Shiro, its claws raining like so many razors. The blows slicing deep into human flesh, But even so, Shiro held his ground, defending the girl until his katanna struck home. The silver blade crackling with chi-fire and answering the Kuei-jin's flurry with a hundred slashes.
"Good-bye Demon, tell the Yama kings hello."
The creature's death through shattered the windows near them and it burst into flame withering away. It was then that Shiro turned and knelt before the girl. He was battered and bloody. His 27 year old frame strong, but his eyes so sad and weary.
"Suki, you are free now. The Demon will bother you no more." Brushing the hair from terrified eyes.
The Shih stood and led her back into the building, ignoring the gathering crowd as he limped through it. Suki watched him start to leave her with the cops, but pulled free of them to follow him.
"You need someone to help carry your swords,Uncle Shiro."
Her little hands taking his battered one in hers; Their eyes meeting and forming a bond of trust that would sustained her so many years...
I have never regretted that day.
Rest in peace Uncle Shiro, Suki is no longer that scared little girl and the yomi that took your life is now cold and still. Journey well so that I may see you with our ancestors. I will miss you.
