In general... i esp. love silverchairs slower stuff.. (~*think*~: ana's song..
& steam will rise* & i hoped
To kick off the album.. we've got a light, happy go lucky song, which gets a little more serious at the bridge... "I don't mean to make u cry, but these feelings run right through the night" the chorus is pretty mediocre... & Daniel Johns manages to drag out every syllable of every word. The bridge is the strongest bit of the song.. but doesn't match the verse or chorus very well at all. There's some orchestral bits in there too.. to dress it up a bit. . & somehow the end reminds me of beatle esque music (03.13)... which gives us a little hope.. until we listen more carefully... personally, i'm not very keen on this song... lyrically its weak "yeh lets just get married, shouting baby, baby, babies!!". & at 5.37 the song drags a bit..
A much stronger riff breaks us into the second track & first single off the album... It's ok.. but again the lyrics let the song down.. & the chorus is a bit slushy "I'm watching you watch over me and I've got the greatest view from here" & although this song does grow on you... its not one of my faves. Daniel Johns gets quite into some bits.. & his emotions do come over well. It's definitely a different style to their usual stuff.. which, in this case, is not necessarily such a good move. This song is more catchy... & poppy... but not silverchair- not the silverchair that I know & love anyway.. it wants to be- it has some angry points "1.54".. but at the end, he seems to run out of lyrics & just sings "na na na na"...
Growly drums & heavy bass makes this a near winner.... it starts off kind of well "Miles away there's hopeless smiles, brighter than mine". Unfortunately, the lyrics there on leave a lot to be desired for "like the sun through the trees on a cloudy day" & "u brighten my life like a polystyrene hat"... but for some reason.. I'm still somehow drawn to this song... i love the chorus "& i've waited for u... so Ill keep holding on".... & He belts out "without you".. & yknow he feels it... & theres a nice little riff at the end of the song (3.20)... not inc. the strange comeback filler end.. 'cos there's a min. left.
This seems like it will be a lighter song from the intro.. but the lyrics contradict this. I really like Daniel Johns' voice on this one... its softer & deeper. However, I think the chorus.. is dull, draggy & predictable..& the "burn, burn, burn, burn, burn" bit just makes me laugh.. u just want him to sing "burn baby burn" but the verses are better... & the bridge is hopeful... but the lyrics have to be the worst of all "violent, big & violent.. like a thing thats big, big & violent" which is a shame 'cos that & the chorus let the song down.. There are some good guitar riffs towards the end... again though.. the song seems to have finished half way through the track time.. & the rest of the time.. is just dragging out a dreary song.
My favourite track. Heavy & much more like the old silverchair. With emotional determined lyrics: "Distant emotion hides a concrete wall.... naked and anchored I'll climb right back to you" & one of the best underlying riffs of the whole album... not to mention the guitar solo which is wickedeebo!! & fits the song well.... & there are some fierce drums smashing... into a light... bridge.. ready to rip back into the chorus. moody, atmospheric & angry.. One Way Mule feels it all.
Crap title... great song. Daniel Johns is still holding on to every last syllable but to good effect in this song. Lyrically its a lot better "take another pill, tell another lie & lye amongst ur lies" & I love the kind of fairy tale bit... "temper" "tampered w/ evidence" ...its very Johns. This is the longest track on the album- but doesn't really drag... it tends to build up.. & then settle down... & then build up all over again... its more like a theatre production than a song!!.... but the last bit is the best!! & sooo addictive "painting a lie, seeing the colours, but u seem closer to everything" & "closer now, than we ever have been" is sooo good!!
I like this one... it very happily goes along quite easily to start off with. It was the b-side to "The Greatest View"... & I'm pleased they decided to put this on the album.... it has a good feel to it-... & the chorus lives up to expectations.. & is stronger... than others. In the "u never stop needing" ending.. Daniel seems quite bitter: "& its good for nothing". Another song on "The Greatest View" b-side, "Pins In My Needles" was a pretty decent track.. & definitely should have been put on the album... along w/ this one.
The "do do do" intro is quite beatley & appears again in the chorus... & again.. i get the feeling the music to this song could quite easily suit a soppy film or some sort of school production.. the lyrics are quite good... "labyrinth of sympathy in which I'm lost and can't leave." & the verse is strong "frozen eyes are bound to melt" but the overall feel to this song.. is a bit slushy & the chorus just makes u want to throw up!!.. & it does go on a bit.
My other favourite... this starts off w/ a spooky, eery kind of creepy hallway.. murder mystery feel.. then knocking is heard... & clanging of a gate.. & some suitable piano/church organ freaky music is played.. & suddenly it kicks in!! Heavy riff, angry feeling... powerful & provocative w/ a wicked pro-chorus riff.. the music slighty reminds me of slave... & about half way through the track time... u conjure up a stabbing scene... while daniel sings "turn the mirrors, face the wall- don't you feel a little weak?" I love the music in this one.. I feel like they've just done some hard mad jamming.. which just happened to work really well.. With my fave. style of steady riff.. building up to heavy ultimate climax.. then simmering down.. but always there... this song's a winner.
The intro leads into a song which is a little reminescent of "Miss You Love" (*Neon Ballroom*). I like how daniel uses his voice in this song... esp. in the verse.. but i find the chorus.. a little draggy.. & quite contradictory to what he sings... he deeply & depressively sings "ur my favourite thing"... the rest of the lyrics are pretty good though "blind the deafened moon, stimulate the tombs of angels..... I'll open my heart, won't fall apart" & I esp. like the "& i feel like letting go"... bit.. i like this- it's got feeling... but its not great.. though i have a feeling "my favourite thing" is definitely the kind of song that will grow on me..
Without a doubt.. the worst track on the album... its starts off w/ simple piano... & weakly.. Johns sings crappy "Munificent, artless and ascetic... Playing like a scared enthusiastic pawn" lyrics... I like the piano music that runs throughout the song.. it gives the song.. some kind of hope.. Daniel hints at personal experience in this song "and every father's pain, casts a shadow over a broken son. You'll be whole again and I'll be whole again" but the chorus.. is awful.. cakey.. mushy.. & something u'd expect from westlife.. not silverchair!! & the last track (08.48-09.50)... if u can call it a track.. is nice piano though a little repetitive ... but nothing special & pretty unecessary.
