The title & author:
The secret diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 3/4-Sue Townsend

The Story:
The diary of an adolescent boy, Adrian Mole, following a year of his life as he: faces a school bully, falls in love & slowly bonds with a lonely 89yr old.

The Extracts:
monday february 2nd
Nigel got thrown out of school dinners today for swearing at the toad-in-the-hole. he said 'it was all bleeding hole and no toad'.

saturday february 14th
here is the poem i wrote inside Pandora's (valentines day) card:

pandora
I adore ya
I implore ye
don't ignore me.

i wrote it left-handed so that she wouldn't know it was from me.

sunday march 8th
my mother has gone to a woman's workshop on assertiveness training. Men aren't allowed. I asked my father what 'assertiveness training' is. He said 'god knows, but whatever it is... its bad news for me'.

saturday february 6th
my mother has gone to a woman's workshop on self-defence. So if my father moans at her for burning the toast she will be able to karate-chop him in the windpipe.

The Verdict:
hilarious, absolutely the funniest book I have ever read. The type of book that depicts life so exactly yet comically, it makes you want to read every bit out loud to the nearest person. Truly lifts your spirit.

The title & author:
Before I Say Goodbye-Ruth Picardie

The Story:
A beautiful, witty & intelligent woman with a loving husband & gorgeous twin babies Joe & Lola, lets us into the last year of her life through personal emails & the series of articles she wrote for "The Observer".

The Extracts:
email to Carrie 20th November '96
(talking of her hair falling out)
Anyway, I am now used to hoovering the bed every morning.

email from India 2nd July '97
(talking about her mother)
then she made me visualise you skipping about, pubic hair intact, in the flowers and sunshine after which she was happy.

Observer Life 3rd August '97
Great, I'm going to die, but I'm going to go bonkers first. Actually, my oncologist tells me that the liver disease is going to get me before the brain tumor.

The Verdict:
One of the most inspiring, heartfelt & well written books ever divulged to the world. Made me smile with guilt and cry learning the cruelty of this world.

The title & author:
The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time-Mark Haddon

The Story:
A 15yr old boy with Asperger's Syndrome, makes an alarming discovery and sets about playing detective as he learns to live in our confusing illogical world as we discover all about his world of facts, figures, trust and lies..

The Extracts:
47
Mr Jeavons asked if i didn't like things changing and i said i wouldn't mind things changing if i became an astronaut, for example, which is one of the biggest changes you can imagine, apart from becoming a girl or dying.

131
These are some of the reasons why i hate yellow and brown:
2)bananas (bananas also turn brown)
3)double yellow lines
6)sweetcorn (because it comes out in your poo and you don't digest it so you are not really meant to eat it, like glass or leaves.

The Verdict:
Wittingly and cleverly written Mark Haddon presents 15yr old Christopher Boon in a loving yet accurate way. This book is funny, sad & yet enlightening... and a real eye-opener into Asperger's Syndrome.

The title & author:
The Lovely Bones-Alice Sebold

The Story:
The story of a young girl, who is murdered following her fascinating journey through heavan as she accepts her death, meets late relatives & keeps her soul alive..

The Verdict:
An insightful peek into heavan as it is.. A few too many characters to keep track of.. and sometimes even a little tedious - but worth a read if you need to believe in a world of souls after death.
