| My father was the next to the youngest of 5 children. My mother was the youngest of 6 children. My parents were both born and raised in their respective same house and town their whole lives--but once they got married, they and their subsequent offspring travelled the world! I am the first born of my family and was always reminded that I had to set an example "because you're the oldest" I vaguely remember being a bit jealous when my mother brought home a new baby-(what was wrong with the old one?) and even tried to get into the bassinette and BE the baby again! We lived in Japan, Okinawa, Mississippi, California, Massachusetts and Texas. Some of my dearest childhood memories are from the times we were in Japan. My family growing up had 5 children--after me there was a girl, 2 boys and another girl. For many years we moved from base to base, packing and unpacking and always being the new kids-we usually were able to make our moves in the summer so school was out and the move was in conjunction with leave Dad had accrued so we got to see some relatives sporadically. We loved to hear our parents tell us stories about when they were young and their families, yet it was difficult for us to relate to "living in a small town" ones whole life. How we longed to stay somewhere for longer than a few years! We did make some friends in the early years that we continue to have contact with to this day-a very special bond is forged between families far from home as they feel they are all they have. Phone calls to the US from overseas are quite expensive-I remember getting what my Mother called "care" packages from her big sister (mother of 9) and they were always filled with hand me down clothes which were like new! Those were also the days of ordering from the Sears catalogue and we all took turns with the wish book making our own lists of what we would like...those were much simpler times--we played outside all the time, jacks, tetherball, marbles, hide-n-seek, swing the statue, tag, red rover, mother may I?, 4-square, dodgeball, baseball. We had a small black & white television but saw no English programs-what was originally in English was dubbed into Japanese--one of the cartoons we saw was Speed Racer, and Godzilla was a favorite (in Japanese but exciting nonetheless!). Most of our entertainment came from AFRTS radio (Paul Harvey and some thriller type shows) or from Dad's music collection and great stereo. |
