Part 1 Castles in Spain

Week 11 Sunday August 28 to Saturday September 3, 2005

Finally, finally I found a place to live. Is it a palace? No. Is it cheap? Extremely. How did I come upon such a great deal. Read and find out.

It all hinges upon the fact that living below ground for the Spanish is the equivalent of being dead and buried. Thay don't like to live in basements and basement apartments in Bilbao, for all intents and purposes, do not exist. There are no basements except for underground garages where you park your car. So what did I do ? I found an apartment in an underground garage. Sounds horrible and it is but it is dirt dirt cheap. It has a kind of Phantom of the Opera kind of feel. Claudette hates it but I'm in no position to be choosey so I call it home sweet home. Better to live in your own hovel then someone else's palace (not everyone agrees with this philosophy).

So, I enter my cave when and how I please with no one to answer to. I even have a little part time job that goes with it and pays some of the rent. Basically I'm the extra night watchman when I'm around.

So what have I got. There are three rooms, my bedroom, a living room/dining room and a small kitchenette. A gas stove that works when its in the mood and a hot plate back-up that constantly blows that fuses in this crumby joint. And did I mention that cars coming into the garage at all hours of the night make an awful racket and wake me constantly if I try to go to sleep at a decent hour? So I don't, that is I stay up late and sleep in the morning when there's not much traffic.

So I seem to be making Txurdinaga ( a barrio of Bilbao) into my home for the next little while. Settling down, yeh, giving up the road for now with all its excesses and wild times (like I had been having them).

Maybe this new world will help to unlock some new music that I have in me. Oh yeh, I met this guy who is 40, lives with his parents (not atypical here) and has his own studio. He gets some work but its not steady. He and I have been talking and it looks like we might do some work together. As I said before, I've been working on a new song or two and I have some more ideas. When I get something new I'll put iot up on some of the web pages. but don't hold your breath cause it will take a month or so at least before there is anything like even a demo to put up.
