Part 1 Castles in Spain

Week 8 Tuesday August 9

Free places to stay are hard to come by and I have no money, Not a winning combination.

So Claudette took me last night to one of the seedier areas in Bilbao. I didn't even know that there were seedy areas. O.k., granted that, compared to Toronto, lots of places in Bilbao look seedy but not seedy dangerous. This area looked somewhat dangerous.

We ended up in a bar (what a surprise) and some guy she apparently knew came over. He had what looked like a joint so, naturally, we did what comes naturally with a joint, we smoked it.

Well it might have been a joint but there was something in it and that's for sure. I got up after a few minutes and my whole body went totally numb. I tried to walk and that's the last thing that I remember. When I woke up I was in a small room but I had no idea where I was actually. I got up feeling ever so woozy and went to the door. I pulled it open and walked over to two guys who were doing something at the table. Money seemed to be chnaging hands.

They were speaking in Basque and, if you think that Spanish is hard or different, you should try Basque on for size. It has no relation to any known language, not romantic or Germanic or nothin'. One weird tongue and only a couple hundred thousand people on this planet can even pretend to speak it. These guys could speak it good or at least, if not, they sure fooled me. I had less than zero idea about what they were talking about, But it looked and smelled like taking care of business.

So I tried to make Spanish small talk but these guys would have none of it.

To be continued...

Thursday August 11

So there I was, not really knowing where I was, who these dudes were, or what I should do next. Then Claudette came in the room from some little door in the back. She acted like nothing was wrong so I did the same. We had some coffee, smoked some cigarettes and she talked in basque with these two guys about who knows what. Then we left and walked down some street, not saying much, got into the subway and I ended up back at Jon and Alicia and back to my problem of the week before. Where to live. hopefully by next week I'll have an answer for you.
