WRITING

In 2nd grade we will be working on improving writing skills.  Go to the bottom of this page to find activities that will help improve your writing skills.

The following skills will be addressed:

·        write a story that has a beginning, middle, and end;

·        include details that support the main idea;

·        stay on topic-stick to the main idea;

·        write about what is read in class;

·        creative writing and letter writing;

·        how to edit and check writing;

·        make up titles for stories;

·        good sentence structure;

·        neat handwriting

Writing papers will be kept in a folder in our classroom.  You can help your child to write more often by encouraging him or her to write letters to family and friends, to write in a journal at home, to write short notes, to write about things your family might do, and to write about important events. Also, talk about writing!  Talk about what he or she does well regarding writing and what needs improvement.  Have your child read their writings to you!  This is good training in identifying what does and does not make sense or if it sounds right or not.  Also, please encourage your child to read a variety of books and magazines.  Good readers become good writers!
