Vocabulary for Communities Unit
1. community—a group of people who live or work together in the same place
2. citizen—a person who belongs to a community
3. fair—done in a way that is right and honest
4. rule—an instruction telling what must or must not be done
5. town—a small part of a community
6. responsibility—something a citizen should take care of or do
7. role—your part in a group
8. urban—a community in the city with lots of people, cars, and tall buildings
9. cooperate—what each group member does to get the job done (working together)
10.neighborhood—the part of your community in which you live
11. map—a drawing that shows you where places are
12. location—the place where something is
13. rural—a community in the country (farms)
14. laws—rules for a community
15. city—a very large town (urban community)
16. suburb—a community near a large city
17. state—a part of a country made up of many cities, towns,
and smaller communities
18. country—an area of land with its own people and its own
rules
19. map key—the part of a map that shows what the symbols
mean
20. map symbol—a small picture that stands for a real thing
on Earth
21. change—to become different over time
