Robinette Family in North Dakota

Mary E. & Paul P. Robinette Jr.

Welcome to the Robinette Family Dakota Camping Page

Camping is a family affair for the Robinette family in Granville. Our "kittens" (now going on nine years old), Serena Anne and Samantha Lee, are older, but they still like to go where we go! We believe they look forward to camping with us on the high plains of our Rough Rider countryside, as we explore the Lewis & Clark trails around Granville, North Dakota.

Big Sky Buffalo Serena and Samantha haven't met our bison neighbors yet, at Granville's nearby Big Sky Buffalo Ranch, but when they do, it should really be interesting to see their reaction! We don't have to go very far since Granville has camping and it is a short trip to the Big Sky Buffalo Ranch.

Make sure to follow the Big Sky Buffalo Ranch link to see Mystical, the only albino buffalo bull in North Dakota. Mystical is a special bison and worth visiting. A tour of the Big Sky Buffalo Ranch, is a "must do" for Granville visitors. It is free and very easy to arrange at the Big Sky Buffalo Ranch A bar C Western Wear Store on Main street.

Granville has a surprising number of stores for campers to shop in while visiting. The most recent stores include Melanie's Gift Shop and Linda's Cozy Cottage which is an antiques & gift shop. The Cozy Cottage is available for "Bed & Breakfast", high teas, or parties. Non-campers and campers, hunters, fishermen or anyone can email Granville's country Bed and Breakfast at Carver Lake Lodge, for information about staying at a Granville working 1900's farmstead. The farm house (several bedrooms) and lodge (great for hunters) is only minutes away from Granville and all of its attractions. Breakfast is served with a view of the lake and sometimes visits from horses or local wildlife.

Granville has a nicely maintained campground with a country atmosphere in Granville's City Park. New showers for campers are scheduled to be built soon and the park restrooms will also be remodeled. The park campground has developed campsites with hookups, shade trees and provides a nice place to stay overnight or longer while visiting. The camper sites are maintained by the City of Granville and are very inexpensive. The park playground and shelters are popular during the summer, and were built by community gifts and volunteer labor.

Zeppelin 181

Robinette Family Campers, Cats & Campsites

Mary and I have recently purchased our replacement camper for this summer's activities. It is a 2004 Zeppelin 181, manufactured by Keystone (a division of Thor) and should prove comfortable for two people with two "camp" cats. The camper is almost nineteen feet in length and has all the usual amenities. The Z181 is light for a camper its size, and should tow easily with our Silverado 1500HD.

One of the places we hope to re-visit is the International Peace Gardens. When Richard and Carolee were visiting us we enjoyed a trip with them to the International Peace Gardens and we remarked at the time that the surrounding countryside would be a very nice place to go camping.

We agree that it is beautiful, restful and the flower gardens are gorgeous. It is also enjoyed by visitors from around the world. Here is a quote from their web site.

"Since 1932, nestled on the U.S. and Canadian borders of North Dakota and Manitoba in a symbol of friendship, lies a One of a Kind International Peace Garden.

Reflecting pools and dazzling colorful floral displays of over 150,000 flowers splash across the grounds of the Formal Gardens terraced walkways. In the distance, echoes the 14-bell chime and the view of the 120-foot concrete Peace Towers, that is located just a few feet from the Peace Chapel. Tourists ponder the beauty of the two floral displays of the American and Canadian Flags, the only two floral designs that remain the same each year.

Presented to the Gardens by the Japanese Government, seven Peace Polls in which, May Peace Prevail is written in twenty-eight different languages. Steel girders transported from the New York World Trade Center lie at rest at the 911 Memorial. Several buildings accommodate; conventions, bus tours, weddings, receptions, reunions, and socials of all types. Campgrounds for campers and RVs are set among Aspen and Oak Trees." For more information, visit the International Peace Gardens.

Trail Rider Paul

Out west, where a recently widowed man from New York consoled himself, by roughing it as a rancher in Medora, North Dakota, is another great camping adventure. Theodore, the future President Roosevelt, did not have RV hookups or air conditioning at his camp sites. You can enjoy all the modern comforts and see the Rough Rider's ranch and a whole lot more by visiting Medora, ND. Historical, wide open spaces and fantasic scenery reward the modern camper in Medora.

One of the activities I enjoyed there was horse back riding. Here is a partial list of other things happening in Medora. Medora Musical, a Nightly show in the Burning Hills Amphitheater. A visit to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, a 36 mile Loop Open 24 hrs a day. Bully, The Play with daily shows at 4:00 pm in the Medora Community Center. A visit to the Painted Canyon Visitor Center is always a treat. It is 7 miles East of Medora on I-94. TR would of appreciated the ND Cowboy Hall of Fame which is a future attraction planned soon. In the Old Town Hall on Broadway, on Saturdays & Sundays Only there are Shows at 1:00, 2:30 & 4:00. And, there is the Pitchfork Fondue ...

North Dakota camping is a unique and fun adventure!
