This is an old song I still like. As you see, you have to click the "play" button to start it. I do think this is the best way to put sound on your site. There are people who don't like blaring sounds coming from a page. (Imagine you're in a library?)

This way, with the "object" tags, should work with most modern browsers. However, if you would like to be the controls smaller, you can do the following: right after the opening "object" tag you add: height="25" width="25%". That should look like this:
You can make the sound start as soon the page is opened by changing the AutoStart value into "true".
