I have information on the following SHAFER line and looking to make connection to possible ancestors to this line.

John SHAFER , Sr.

b. May 18, 1801 in West Penn Twsp. of what is now Schuylkill Co. Research indicates that in 1801 this area was most likely part of Northampton Co., PA. I have one history text from the late 1800's that says this however there seems to be some conflict. It may have been part of Berks as Schuylkill was formed from these two counties in 1811 and the area that is West Penn Twsp. lies very close to the then county lines. d. Aug. 14, 1883 (1885?) and is to have been buried in the White Haven Cemetery. All or part of this cemetery is now called the Laurel Cemetery. Conversations with the caretaker/proprietor in 1995 could not find his name in the records. However, they indicated that this was not unusual as only plot owners names are on the record cards for that time period and if a friend or family member donated a plot his name would be on the card but not in the alphabetical file.

This is most likely the case as several of his sons were buried at the Ivy Cemetery in Hazelton, including Jacob who pre-deceased him. Ivy has no record of a John Shafer. The information I have regarding this was compiled into a small pamphlet by one of his son's shortly after his death and is quite detailed. Copies of this pamphlet have been handed down for what now is over 100 years. The question as to year of death revolves around a conflict in data. My cousin has his d.o.d as 1885 yet the pamphlet done by the son remarks that he was of the advanced age of 82 years, 2 months, and 27 days. This, of course, places the d.o.d as August 14, 1883.

Other specifics of the pamphlet are that a service was held at the home in Tunnel Hill, Dennison Twsp. , Luzerne Co.,PA by a Rev. H.H. Brunning of St. Pauls Evangelical Luthern Church of White Haven. I have verified that Rev. Bruning was indeed that the pastor at that time and he is buried in White Haven (now Laurel) Cemetery. The body was then taken by train to White Haven and a regular service was conducted by a Rev. King of the Methodist Episcopal Church in White Haven. This supports the assertion that he is buried in White Haven Cemetery which the pamphlet states.

Married Magdelena (spelling unknown) Fryman in 1829. Ceremony was conducted by Rev. John Zulick.

Employed by the Little Schuylkill Railroad Company while in the Schuylkill County area.

Moved with family to Dension Twsp., Luzerne Co., PA in 1838.

Employed by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. after moving to Luzerne Co.

John and Magdelena had 14 children - 5 girls and 9 boys.

The children in chronological order where:

Sarah b. 08/10/1832 d. 04/13/1915

Issac b. 03/15/1833 d. 03/30/1867

John Jr. b. 10/14/1835 d. 10/21/1917

Nathan b. 06/04/1837 d. 01/25/1933

Mary b. 01/15/1839 d. 06/24/1919

Jacob b. 05/24/1841 d. 11/01/1869

David b. 06/15/1843 d. 10/20/1933

William b. 02/15/1845 d. 07/05/1932

Hannah b. 12/20/1846 d. 05/15/1920

Catherine b. 03/15/1849 d. 09/22/1851

Daniel b. 01/09/1852 d. 01/10/1903

George b. 12/08/1853 d. 02/22/1917

Edward b. 10/21/1855 d. 09/28/1944

Mirah (Miriah?) b. 10/01/1858 d. 07/12/1944

Specifics that may help make connections are as follows:

To my knowledge all of the family remained in the general area

of Luzerne County, PA except Edward.

Edward was my great-grandfather and moved to Pittsburgh with

his own family in 1904. He had married Mary Theresa Speck and

had 7 children. His oldest was John Edward SHAFER who was my

grand-father (b. 07/21/1879 d. 06/18/1914)

Five of the boys fought in the US Civil War, as follows:

Nathan and Jacob: 61st. Pa. Vol. Reg.

David 132nd. Pa. Vol. Reg.8th Pa. Cav.

John, Jr. 143rd. Pa. Vol. Reg. (Roy Stone's Bucktail Brigade which was 1st. Corp, 3rd. Div., 2nd. Brig.) William 153rd. Pa. Vol. Reg. John, Jr., William, and Jacob were all at Gettysburg. Nathan was a railroad worker for the Lehigh Valley R.R. and was killed in an accident on Nov. 1, 1869. Most of this information is from a family history that one of my distant cousins did in the late 1970's. Much of the information was written down and put into a pamphlet that my g-gf. Edward assembled sometime in the late 1930's or early 40' shortly before his death in 1944. As he was at least in his early 80's at the time and some of this was done from memory some of the dates may be incorrect. I have verified all the civil war records and they are correct. I have verified from the 1850 PA. Census that a John Shafer lived in Dennison Twsp., Luzerne Co. I can make no strong connections to my g-g-gf prior to this. I am specifically looking for leads to research as to my paternal g-g-g-gf. The 1790 and 1800 PA. Census show some (but not many) of the spelling SHAFER in the appropriate area (Northampton and Berks Counties) but I can make no strong connections. There is a much stronger connection from the 1790 and 1800 census to the spellings either of SCHAFFER and SCHAEFFER. Also to note there is some minor evidence to support the fact that the name may have been shortened from SCHAFER (or other variation) as Nathan (one of John Srs. sons) apparently spelled his name this way all his adult life. I haven't verified his name spelling from the civil war records as he was sick with "Camp Fever" in a Philadelphia hospital at the time of the Battle of Gettysburg and thus was not listed on the Pennsylvania Memorial. John, Jr., Jacob, and William were present, as stated, and are listed on the Pennsylvania Memorial as to to their corresponding regiments by the spelling SHAFER.--

Subject: Certain Swiss Schaffers

Hello S(c)haffers. I'm new to your subscription list. I have the good fortune to live on the Big Island of Hawaii, but, because I live so far from the great genealogical libraries of the Mainland, I must conduct my family history research the very best I can by way of smail and email.

I am seeking descendancy and ancestry information about a couple that emigrated around 1850 from an area of Switzerland close to the German and French borders. Hand-me-down family lore has it that this couple carried a Germanic surname but preferred the French culture and spoke that language. They appeared next in 1854 in Wayne County, Ohio (near Wooster) where their daughter married a French-speaking, Catholic man from the village of Boncourt, Cantone Jura, Switzerland. Here are the details I have:

father Henry J. Schaffer (aka Shaffer)

mother Cathrine _____?________

daughter Victoire (Victoria) born 8 April 1831, Switzerland married 14 June 1852, Wayne County, Ohio son-in-law Francois Xavier Gelin who was born 25 September 1825, Boncourt, Switzerland

Francois and Victoire are great grandparents on my mother's side.

Under the guidance of several persons, mainly Doug Schorey and Donald Blais, both Swiss researchers of great experience, I have just begun the laborious procedure of sending for tapes from Salt Lake City via my local LDS Family History Center. The Schaffer surname is registered before 1800 in the villages of Mirchel and Stettlen in Canton Bern, Switzerland, so that is where I am starting and those are the tapes I have ordered but not yet received.

Has anyone out there been down this path? Does anyone out there have any information on this family?

You know I'd be beholden..........Aloha and Mele Kalikimaka,

In my husband's line was John Charles Shaffer, resident of Evanston, IL and newspaper publisher. When he died in 1943, he was the publisher of the Indianapolis Star and the Muncie Star. At various times he was the owner and publisher of Terre Haute Star and the Louisville Herald, the Denver Republican, the Denver Times and the Rocky Mountain News.

I have a few newspaper articles which go on and on about this man and his accomplishments, but I'm looking for his living descendants. My mother-in-law remembers visiting "Uncle Charley's" ranch in Colorado which was named "Ken-Caryl" after his sons, Kent and Carroll. Kent must have preceded him in death, as Carroll is the only son listed as survivor in John's obituary.

Anyone have this man in their line? Other names mentioned in the articles are Helen Shaffer, which I presume to be Carroll's wife, Virginia Shaffer Devlin and Marjorie Shaffer Hage, possibly his sisters?

I hope you locate the descendants; I want to tell you a story for your protection because the Colorado location brings this back.

I go to Colorado every summer (Ft. Collins/CSU). The Ken-Caryl Ranch sounds familiar, but I do not know if it was the place I'm about to describe. Before I was interested in genealogy, I was driving on US 34 west of Loveland & Estes Park through Big Thompson Canyon. (This was after the 1976 flood, in which I lost several coworkers). I noticed "Shaffer" on a mailbox at a little inn & stopped with my family to get something to eat. They didn't want to serve us, like we were interrupting something. They scrounged around to get a little something for us, including milk for our baby. It was eerie at worst and rude at best. I asked who the Shaffers were who owned it since that was my name; I got stone silence from the older couple who seemed to run it. We left ASAP.

Two or three years later we stopped after dark again after a day of driving. I left the car running to keep my family warm while I just thought I'd pop in & check again. I had begun family history searching & had a lot of information. I'm very outgoing & when I inquired if there were Shaffers who still ran the place, a "bar tender"type, seemed to take offense at my presence, again tight-lipped, but "asking" another couple rowdies if they ever heard of the Shaffers that owned the place. As I was surrounded, I was told that was not what I was really looking for was it. Many times I had been told while walking up on a gathering of all kinds of events that people thought I was a narc. I assumed they thought something like that & that I better stop this Shaffer history stuff because they weren't buying it. Since I'm a praying person, & in instances like that, one of the sharper knives in the drawer, I carefully exited the establishment, thankful that my wife had a husband and children had a father. Perhaps owning the Rocky Mountain News and Denver papers, he made many enemies (or just wanted privacy), if this was the person mentioned. I hope not; but in any event, if you're looking for lost relatives in CO, along US Route 34 in Big Thompson Canyon, I recommend you go prayerfully if at all. You can't miss this place as there are few places along the route that allow dwellings or restaurants.

Wondered if your database happens to have a Solomon Levi Shaffer, bc.1815 in Pennsylvania. I pick him up in a nespaper ad in Michigan for a runaway apprentice, circa 1831. He was named Levi Shaffer. Later he appears as a family man in Washtenaw and Ingham Counties with many land transactions around what is now Lansing and I can follow him from there. Census data always gives his place of birth as PA, but no city or county.

He may have had a brother named Jesse who was born in Philadelphia but this is speculative. I also suspect that his father may have been named John although I do not find this name among his children. William was his eldest son.

I have had no luck in tracing Levi's parentage for more than six years and am desperately hunting clues.
