Dear Jim Brown:

I sure hope this gets to you! I understand that you are researching Smith's from Somerset County, PA. I am too. Do your Smith's by any chance have a John W. Smith and Annie Catherine Sass (Schneider?) in that family? Are they from the Meyersdale (Meyer's Mill) area of Somerset Cty?

Subject: TODD; SC,USA > AL,USA; 1825-

Looking for father of Joshua and James Todd, born ca 1825 and 1829 respectively. First find them in AL, and have found references to their father coming from SC but when I am not sure!

In Baldwin Co., AL in 1850 Joshua Todd and wife Lucinda, two sons so far next door, James Todd and first wife Sarah, one daughter and possible mother of Joshua and James, Nancy Todd age 64. By 1860 they are in Choctaw Co., AL where they stayed.

It is possible that father of Joshua and James was Joshua Todd also. 1830 Dallas Co. census gives Joshua Todd head of household, 2 males under age 5, 1 male 50-60, 2 females 5-15, 1 female 40-50. These age ranges fit Joshua, James and their mother Nancy. No trace of Joshua the possible father after 1830. There could have been older children who were married and out of the house by 1830, as Nancy would have children in their 20's if she had a child at 20 herself.

Any suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you. Stef

Subject: SHAFFER/GREGORY, Warren Co., NJ, 1800s

I have a set of g,g,g grandparents who came from Warren Co., NJ. John Brink Shaffer was b. in 1819 and his wife Lucinda Gregory was b. in 1829. They were m. there (I have the marriage record) in 1846, then left for a short period in Ohio and then on to Cedar Co., Iowa, where she d. in 1868 and he in 1891.

I have not been too successful in finding out out their families in NJ. We think his mother may have been a Charity ? (Brink?) Shaffer who died intestate in 1878. Her small estate of $295 was administered by a Samuel Shaffer according to the records I received this week, and she was a resident of Mansfield Twp, which I didn't know until this week.

What I need to do is come to NJ and spend a few days, but at this time that is impossible. I did communicate with one researcher a year ago, but her rates, $20. per hour, 5 hours in advance, were more that I could afford to spend on the unknown! My genealogy budget is bursting most of the time anyway!

If any one would look at these names in any local histories or books or records, I'd be most grateful. Charity Shaffer could be the mother of John Brink Shaffer and his brother George Shaffer who also went to Iowa. George was b. in 1817 and was m. to a Rachel ? , b. in 1823, in NY state. My information comes from records in Iowa, the Iowa cemeteries, and US Census Records.
