Pashupathi Nath Temple -15 Feb 2001

Nepal is known as the "Country Of Temples".
And the Chief Deity of  Hindus in Nepal are
Lord Shivshankar and Goddess Durga. Lord
Shiva is better known as Pashupatinath .The
famous Pashupatinath Temple is in a place
called "Goshala" 5 kms east of  Katmandu
and situated on the bank of River Bagmathi.

The roadsides leading to the temple is fully occupied by small shopkeepers and Sanyasis doing their penance. The shops sell Rudrashas. It is here that you get original Rudrakshas in plenty.(But do take care that they don't cheat you with some other dried fruit in the shape of rudraksha)

The temple follow Strict rules like for eg: Leather shoes & belts are not allowed inside ,Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter inside temple premises etc.(But I did find many tourists inside).

Even on a normal day there is a large crowd waiting for worship, leave alone festival days. Capt.Shah helped us to get a special darshan of the Maha Shivling and I consider myself to be blessed !

The temple is very big and lots of other deities also are found in separate temples. And yes, each one with its own story associated with it! "Chousati" one such corner of the temple where there are 525 Small shivlings and a maze like passage through them .One has to touch all of them and cannot come out of the maze unless you pass through all of them -Such is the architecture!

Another interesting matter in this temple is the "God Kalibhagwan" -The tenth Avatar of God Vishnu. The Kali bhagwan Statue is believed to rise up from underground on its own as time passes.that is as Kaliyug proceeds the statue slowly emerges from beneath. At present we can see a little beyond the hip.And it is believed that once the statue comes out completely ,The Kali avatar will take place and that is the end of the world! (Don't worry! the statue has remained in its present condition for the past 50 years!)

Another deity here is the Lingeshwar who grants Children to those do not have children.

In part of the temple we found the river Bagmathi .And there were Funeral places on its banks. But these funeral places are only for the members of Royal family!

The whole temple in itself is a beautiful piece of architecture and is Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Monument List in 1979.

Personally I think that temple and surroundings can be better maintained in order to keep up the sanctity of a place of Worship.
