THE SINGLE BIGGEST KILLER...

Here in the West...

According to the mainstream media, one might think that the biggest killer in the world today is TERRORISM. We have the continuing reminders of the events of September 11th. We have the so-called 'war on terrorism'. We have the violence in the Middle East...

Are these truly the most devastating and catatastrophic scenarios that have surpassed in recent global history?

The answer to this is an emphatic NO.

THE TRUTH:

Death toll on account of the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 1998:

2.5 MILLION

"If it has not happened already, any month now the war in eastern Congo will likely exceed the Cambodian conflict as the most deadly war to occur anywhere in the world since World War II," said Les Roberts, director of health policy for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), who has twice conducted mortality surveys in the war zone. The latest survey, carried out in March, estimated that the war caused as many as 2.5 million deaths, many from diseases that would have been treated but for the fighting."   MORE...

This is equivalent to the death toll of the suicide hijackings of September 11th occurring EVERY 36 HOURS FOR TWENTY-TWO MONTHS STRAIGHT. Is this issue constantly in the daily news? Why not?

Perhaps... one might say callously that this is not of immediate concern to those of us in the Western civilization. Well then, why don't we ascertain what is actually the single biggest killer today in, say, the leader of the Western civilized world, the United States of America? Surely THIS would be news.

According to the attention paid to certain issues in the American mainstream media, one might be inclined to think that this is either:
  1. Heinous crime

    OR

  2. Death by spectacular accident such as fire or automobile

After all, isn't this what we see night after night on the local news in America? Why would they lie? But you see, they don't lie... well... not really...

What they do, however, is give us the strong impression that certain things are so by the AMOUNT OF COVERAGE they give to certain issues.

But if one wants to know the truth and the real news, one must ask honestly and earnestly:

"What is truly the single biggest killer in America today?"

Well, believe it or not, the answer to this is...

TOBACCO.

No kidding.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control reports that tobacco kills 435,000 U.S. citizens each year while alcohol deaths total approximately 100,000 and motor vehicle accidents contribute to 40,000 deaths per year. In fact, tobacco-related deaths exceed the total deaths caused by alcohol, car accidents, AIDS, suicide, homicide, fires, cocaine/crack, and heroin combined (247,700)."

The number of people dying in America due to tobacco-related disease is like September 11th happening over 100 TIMES EVERY YEAR. And is this portrayed as an issue of grave concern night after night on the news in America? Once again, the answer, sadly, is NO. Although it should be.

A loss of life is a loss of life.

In the end, losing a loved one to emphysema is the same as losing a loved one in the collapse of a world reknown skyscraper. No matter that incurring a tobacco-related disease involves the seemingly voluntary action of smoking cigarettes. How much daily analysis is given to exactly how 'voluntary' smoking is anyway? Imagine seeing a slot on the news tonight telling you that OVER ONE THOUSAND LIVES WERE LOST TODAY in America on account of smoking cigarettes. And then imagine tomorrow seeing yet another slot on the nightly news telling you that yet ANOTHER ONE THOUSAND LIVES WERE LOST TODAY in America on account of smoking cigarettes. Imagine seeing this go on night after night, day after day, the continous news that, on the average, 1191 people are dying every day in America on account of smoking cigarettes. Then, on top of this, imagine seeing constant in-depth analysis as to exactly how much money BIG TOBACCO companies make, how highly addictive nicotine is, accompanied by grotesque images of the debilitating effects of lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other tobacco-related illnesses EVERYDAY ON THE SIX O'CLOCK NEWS. How many people do you think would continue to smoke cigarettes after, say, three months of continuous news coverage like this?

You know the answer.

So what's up with this?

In a manner of speaking, concerning tobacco-related disease causing death, the crime and the perpetrators are readily defined. Big tobacco companies are not hidden away somewhere in mountain enclaves in Tora Bora, Afghanistan. They are right out in the open in downtown America. They are peddling a highly addictive and deadly substance to a stressed-out general public every day at the corner store. AND they are making big bucks doing this.

$$$$

IS THIS NOT A CRIME?

Now take the above scenario of appropriate news coverage and apply it to:

Civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo:

2.5 MILLION DEAD SINCE 1998

OR

13 Million People Die Every Year from CURABLE AND PREVENTABLE Infectious Diseases

OR

25 Million People Infected With and Possibly Dying of AIDS in Sub-Sahara Africa

OR

1.2 Billion People Worldwide Live Without Access To Clean Drinking water

OR

3 Billion People Worldwide Live On Less Than $2 PER DAY

OR

...UN development experts observe that the world is heading toward "grotesque inequalities," concluding: "Development that perpetuates today's inequalities is neither sustainable nor worth sustaining."

THIS IS THE REAL DAILY NEWS.

The fact we do not see this every day on the news is a clear example of the GREAT DECEPTION perpetrated by the Western mainstream media...

And this deception, unfortunately, will get deeper and deadlier as we all race uncontrollably towards...

THE NEW WORLD ORDER

This is why...

... THE O. J. SIMPSON TRIAL GOT MORE MEDIA COVERAGE
THAN THE GENOCIDE OF 800,000 PEOPLE IN RWANDA...

And that's not all...

Cover photos of O. J. Simpson on Time and Newsweek
magazines appearing side-by-side. (37.8KB)

Shortly after his arrest for the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman - this cover photo of O. J. Simpson was 'retouched' dramatically using computer technology. Compared with the original LAPD mug shot of Simpson, the retouched photo darkened Simpson's face making him appear more sinister and ultimately, 'guilty'. The top of the photo was also darkened and the police line-up numbers were smaller. During the same week, Newsweek also ran the exact same mug shot photo on their cover with one exception - it was NOT retouched. The two magazines appearing side-by-side on the newstands created a storm of controversy. Time magazine was accused of using racial stereotyping and 'altering' the news (since a photo constitutes a news item).

This kind of 'hyped' news coverage is quite common in the Western mass media.

James Gaines, the managing editor of Time, who made the decision to run the Simpson photo, stated in his defense,

'every major news outlet routinely crops and retouches photos to eliminate minor, extraneous elements, as long as the essential meaning of the picture is left intact"

(Time, July 4, 1994, p.4).

Gaines also admitted that it was 'not immediately apparent' that the cover of Time had depicted a photo-illustration as opposed to an unaltered photo representing a news document.

Practices such as these have led to a blurring of the line between reality and fiction. In essence, the magic of slick Hollywood production is finding its way onto the front page of the news.

This has alot to do with big corporate mergers... e.g. Time and Warner, ABC and Disney. As a result of these mergers, the separation between the 'Church' (sacrosanct unbiased news coverage) and the 'State' (demands of big business) has ceased to exist.

Nowadays, alot of news is censored for being too disturbing and interfering with the 'buying mood'. What remains is weak and superficial. As a result, it is sometimes necessary to manufacture and/or 'enhance' the news to give it more punch. The solution is a dependency on cheap trickery which can have a profound effect on the minds of the masses.

Some have attempted to comment on O. J. Simpson cover photo controversy but then bandied about nice palatable, non-threatening phrases like 'a critical analysis of photojournalistic ethics'. In my humble opinion this just constitutes more cover-up.

Let's just cut to the chase.

The plain truth is:

The O. J. Simpson photo-illustration is an example of media output which subtly leads us into a white supremacist state of mind.

Period.

Most of us fail to realize that we are being coerced to think a certain way. Collectively, we represent a giant pool of data on consumer habits with (in America) 6 trillion dollars in our pockets ready to spend. It only remains to tweak our sensibilities enough to get us forking over our hard earned cash without too much deep thinking going on to muck up the process. By creating a nice lily-white environment, this intellectual wasteland is finetuned with the ease of turning the dial on a radio to get rid of the static. It's like a big laboratory experiment. It's kind of ironic that modern life is commonly known as the 'rat race'....

MAKE YOUR BREAKFAST... HAM AND EGGS... CORNFLAKES MAKE SENSE... EVERY DAY... MAKE YOUR LUNCH... HAVE A SMOKE... LISTEN TO SOMEONE... TELL A JOKE... (HA HA)... MAKE YOUR SUPPER... GO TO BED... DO IT OVER... TILL YOU'RE DEAD...

And as we run around the labyrinth of our daily routine looking for that big piece of cheese (which we are constantly told is just around the corner), the plain fact of the matter is we cannot take the time and energy to investigate each and every news item. Hence, we never suspect that the mainstream news sources commonly fail to present ALL the facts and likewise fail to serve them up untainted by so-called 'routine retouching'. And when the mainstream news sources are compromised then our perception of the world is compromised.

This is the bottom line.

TAKING CONTROL:

First of all, if you want to really learn about the world in which we live in, VARY YOUR SOURCES.

The worst thing you can do is to stick with one news source or develop a 'favourite'. Even amidst the major corporate news sources, there is enough variation to provide deeper coverage of an issue. This is especially true when you get your news from the internet and a completely different national news media is just a click away. Different countries have different agendas. Not all western countries blindly support the ideals of the American government. This means that the mass media operating in these countries are trying to push different buttons and run different filters as they pump out the 'news'. By varying your sources you create cracks in the system and stuff starts leaking through. Don't just read the American version of CNN all the time. Check in at Canada's Globe & Mail or CTV and then go to the United Kingdom and check out what's happening at the BBC. Then The Guardian. Then check in at Reuters. If you don't have time to do this everyday then switch up everyday. One day, The Guardian, the next day, Reuters. Etcetera.

Do you eat the same food everyday? Then why read/watch the same news everyday?

Remember, you are what you 'eat'.

Moreover, don't just settle for the headlines thrown at you on the home page of mainstream media websites. Dig down and browse through the archives. This is where the 'real news' is. The flash-in-the-pan stuff that gets little coverage is the very news you need to see.

Secondly, no matter how much you vary your selection of major mass media, you will still be limited to restraints that corporate advertisers place on the content of the news at these sites. It is important to keep tabs on some alternative sources which are funded differently and tend to think 'outside the box'. When your goal is to get the news, it is paramount to think objectively and look beyond the 'official story'. Alternative sources can provide an extensive collection of opposing views that slip through the filters in a wide variety of mainstream sources. Some have a specific agenda. Others do not. Once again, it is important to remain flexible and vary your sources.

Just a few examples of some online alternative sources:

Jeff Rense Program
WorldNetDaily
Bushwatch
CentrExNews
FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting)
Environment News Service
Buzzflash Report

Thirdly, if you must watch television, and you have a VCR, never watch 'live TV'. Instead, videotape the program(s) that you want to watch while doing something else in the meantime (like read a book or go online). Then later when you watch the program(s) that you taped, whenever an advertisement comes on, click on 'fast-forward' until the advertisement is over and your program comes on again. This way you can greatly decrease your exposure to unwanted commercial advertising. Try this for a month or so and see how it is to watch television WITHOUT ADVERTISING. Not only does this help to deprogram your mind but the time that you actually spend watching television will be considerably reduced since television advertising takes up about 25% of viewing time. Try videotaping a news program and likewise watch it later and click on 'fast-forward' everytime you encounter a news item that doesn't really interest you. You may find that, to your astonishment, after 'filtering out' all the ads and other unnecessary 'fluff', a news program that lasts for one hour really only contains about five minutes of truly important news. The rest of the time you are just being 'programmed'.

And last but not least, when reading newspapers, try to at least take a glance at EVERY PAGE in the newspaper instead of just letting yourself be directed around by the headlines on the front page. More often than not, the news that we really need to see is in a place where we do not normally look, such as, for example, news articles appearing on the second last page of section D crammed amidst the classified ads as 'space filler'. These are the articles that the mainstream newspaper publisher rarely depends on to create a 'corporate-friendly environment' in order to attract advertisers. These articles tucked away in the back of the newspaper are simply, in terms of drawing advertising power, the 'dregs' of the news. Their positioning subliminally defines them as less important than front page news. This, however, is not always the case. Quite often, this is simply the news that corporate advertisers would most likely object to if it was given constant front page status. And whatever news that corporate advertisers might object to is definitely something you want to read. Take this a step further and learn to be suspicious of repetitive front page news coverage. As reprehensible as they are, suicide bombings in Israel are not the sum total of global current events. Clearly, a specific agenda is at play when every single Israeli casualty is counted and given steady front page status in the Western media while untold millions silently suffer and die in many other parts of the globe.

Likewise, don't wait for the newspaper to do a follow-up on backpage stories. This is not likely to happen. Rather, follow it up yourself. Resist being led around on a leash to the news that 'they' want you to read. There is a world of information out there (especially on the internet). Find the alternative sources. Tap into them and break the habits.

Take control.

Research and destroy the social conditioning...

When newspaper executives make a commitment to change, they often show great prowess in meeting their goals: Consider the breathtaking speed with which they added color graphics and lifestyle sections to their pages.

When it comes to fulfilling their 1978 pledge to integrate people of color into their staffs, however, most newspaper editors are moving slower than a Gutenberg press. The American Society of Newspaper Editors' goal was to achieve minority employment at daily newspapers "equivalent to the percentage of minority persons within the national population" by the year 2000. Racial minorities now constitute 11.6 percent of news staffs but 27.3 percent of the country's population. At the rate newspapers are going (ASNE last year extended its deadline by 25 years), they won't reach their goal until late in the next century...

Corporations have chokehold on U.S. media

By Bernie Sanders
Source: Star-Telegram

One of our best-kept secrets is the degree to which a handful of huge corporations control the flow of information in the United States.

Whether it is television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books or the Internet, a few giant conglomerates are determining what we see, hear and read. And the situation is likely to become much worse as a result of radical deregulation efforts by the Bush administration and some horrendous court decisions.

Television is the means by which most Americans get their "news." Without exception, every major network is owned by a huge conglomerate that has enormous conflicts of interest.

Fox News Channel is owned by Rupert Murdoch, a right-wing Australian who already owns a significant portion of the world's media. His network has close ties to the Republican Party, and among his "fair and balanced" commentators is Newt Gingrich.

NBC is owned by General Electric, one of the largest corporations in the world - and one with a long history of anti-union activity. GE, a major contributor to the Republican Party, has substantial financial interests in weapons manufacturing, finance, nuclear power and many other industries. Former CEO Jack Welch was one of the leaders in shutting down American plants and moving them to low-wage countries like China and Mexico.

ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co., which produces toys and products in developing countries where workers are provided with atrocious wages and working conditions.

CBS is owned by Viacom, another huge media conglomerate that owns (among other entities) MTV, Showtime, Nickelodeon, VH1, TNN, CMT, 39 broadcast television stations, 184 radio stations, Paramount Pictures and Blockbuster Inc.

The essential problem with television is not just a right-wing bias in news and programming, or the transformation of politics and government into entertainment and sensationalism. Nor is it just the constant bombardment of advertising, much of it directed at children.

It's that the most important issues facing the middle-class and working people of our country are rarely discussed. The average American does not see his or her reality reflected on the television screen...

A Propaganda Model

excerpted from the book ~
Manufacturing Consent
by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky,
Pantheon Books, 1988

The mass media serve as a system for communicating messages and symbols to the general populace. It is their function to amuse, entertain, and inform, and to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior that will integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society. In a world of concentrated wealth and major conflicts of class interest, to fulfill this role requires systematic propaganda.

In countries where the levers of power are in the hands of a state bureaucracy, the monopolistic control over the media, often supplemented by official censorship, makes it clear that the media serve the ends of a dominant elite. It is much more difficult to see a propaganda system at work where the media are private and formal censorship is absent. This is especially true where the media actively compete, periodically attack and expose corporate and governmental malfeasance, and aggressively portray themselves as spokesmen for free speech and the general community interest. What is not evident (and remains undiscussed in the media) is the limited nature of such critiques, as well as the huge inequality in command of resources, and its effect both on access to a private media system and on its behavior and performance.

A propaganda model focuses on this inequality of wealth and power and its multilevel effects on mass-media interests and choices. It traces the routes by which money and power are able to filter out the news fit to print, marginalize dissent, and allow the government and dominant private interests to get their messages across to the public. The essential ingredients of our propaganda model, or set of news "filters," fall under the following headings: (I) the size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth, and profit orientation of the dominant mass-media firms; (2) advertising as the primary income source of the mass media; (3) the reliance of the media on information provided by government, business, and "experts" funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power; (4) "flak" as a means of disciplining the media; and (5) "anticommunism" as a national religion and control mechanism. These elements interact with and reinforce one another. The raw material of news must pass through successive filters, leaving only the cleansed residue fit to print. They fix the premises of discourse and interpretation, and the definition of what is newsworthy in the first place, and they explain the basis and operations of what amount to propaganda campaigns.

The elite domination of the media and marginalization of dissidents that results from the operation of these filters occurs so naturally that media news people, frequently operating with complete integrity and goodwill, are able to convince themselves that they choose and interpret the news "objectively" and on the basis of professional news values. Within the limits of the filter constraints they often are objective; the constraints are so powerful, and are built into the system in such a fundamental way, that alternative bases of news choices are hardly imaginable...

The Media Monopoly

excerpt from book - The Media Monopoly
By Ben H. Bagdikian,
Preface to the Sixth Edition, 2000

As the United States enters the twenty-first century, power over the American mass media is flowing to the top with such devouring speed that it exceeds even the accelerated consolidations of the last twenty years. For the first time in U.S. history, the country's most widespread news, commentary, and daily entertainment are controlled by six firms that are among the world's largest corporations, two of them foreign.

Even with the dramatic entry of the Internet and the cyber world with their uncounted hundreds of new firms, the controlling handful of American and foreign corporations now exceed in their size and communications power anything the world has seen before. Their intricate global interlocks create the force of an international cartel.

There are pernicious consequences. While excessive bigness itself is cause for economic anxieties, the worst problems are political and social. The country's largest media giants have achieved alarming success in writing the media laws and regulations in favour of their own corporations and against the interests of the general public. Their concentrated power permits them to become a larger factor than ever before in socializing each generation with entertainment models of behavior and personal values...
