March 2001

Committee Meeting

Eagle

The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM.  In attendance were:  Beth B., Leslie C., Pat E., Rick H., Casey M., Jeff M., Mark M., Jack R., Terry S. and Russ W.. Also in attendance was Mr. S. from the Kiwanis Club.

Secretary's reportMinutes were previously handed out at the February Pack Meeting and posted on the website.

Treasurer's reportBalance as of February 28, 2001 was $2,490.35.  A motion was made and seconded to reimburse Mark M. for flowers he purchased on behalf of the troop for Mr. Jerry M.'s funeral.

Old Business  A discussion concerning donations to the church for our use of church facilities for the Blue and Gold Banquet was brought to the committee's attention. No donation has been made for the last two years.  A motion was made to give a donation of $125.00, the motion was seconded.   The Pack also gave a $50.00 donation to the church for the use of the kitchen and fellowship hall during the Blue and Gold Banquet.  We would like to thank Carol R. for typing the Blue and Gold Program.  It was suggested that a  list of the names of our Scouts and Den Leaders be included.  Leslie C. mentioned that the names of the Den Chiefs were omitted from the program.

Service Pins were discussed by the committee. Many of the Den Leaders did not mention the service pins when ordering awards for the Blue and Gold.  All Scouts should be earning pins depending on their time as a cub.  Cubs may wear two service pins at this point.  One from Tiger Cubs with a orange backing if they participated in Tigers and one for Cub Scouts with a yellow backing based on how many years they have been involved. Old pins from Cub Scouts may be turned in and recycled within the Pack or the boys may keep them as mementos.  Den Leaders may also wear service pins with a blue backing based on how many years they have been a leader, plus if they participated as a Tiger Cub Parent that can be counted as an additional year of service.

The March meeting will also include bridging of our second year Webelos. Troop 190 will bring the bridge.  We have one boy bridging to Troop 283 a representative from that troop will be present to accept this scout. Troop 283 and 190 are arranging the event.  Recognition will be made to those Webelos who have earned all 20 pins and are bridging into a Boy Scout Troop.   Either a Boy Scout Handbook or Field Guide will be awarded. All awards need to be in to Russ W., our new awards chairperson, by Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in order for him to pick them up. Leslie C. offered to send an email to all Den Leaders detailing the awards.  Mr. Skip E. will be joining us for this event.

The annual Scouting for Food drive will be held on March 17th and the 24th.  Hang tags will be placed on the 17th.  Terry Snyder will copy maps for distribution along with the hangtags to be handed out at the March Pack Meeting.  The Den Leaders can determine their den's starting time.  This is a Pack requirement for service to the community.

New Business

Mechanicsburg School District is considering a new organizational school flyer policy.  The school board meets on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th Tuesday of each month.. Leslie will look into what the procedures and time frames will be for distribution of flyers.  This is important for the Pack to know in order to better announce our fall sign-up for new Scouts.

Mark M. discussed various upcoming events that the Pack will be promoting:

Cub Scout Leader and Parents Camp Promotion:  Saturday, March 10th 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.  This event is free and will include information of camping opportunities being offered this summer at Hidden Valley Scout Reservation.

Adventure District-Cub Scout Leader Basic Training:  Wednesday, March 14th , Part I and Wednesday, March 21st, Part II.  Any interested Cub Scout Leader or member of the Pack is invited. The cost is $5.00 per Scouter.   Remember training is required as part of our quality award.

Family Fun Walk:  April 7, 2001.  This is a Council sanctioned fund-raiser.  The Cub Scouts will hike about 5 miles and Boy Scouts about 10 miles.  All participants that raise  at least $40.00 in pledges will receive the commemorative patch.

Island Castaway Camporee: Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Hidden Valley.  10:30 AM - 8:30    PM  $5.00 registration fee if received before March 31st.

If you are interested in any of the above events, please contact Mark M. or your Den Leader.  The brochures explaining these events will be available to view at the March Pack meeting.

The Pack has already expressed interest in the Spring Popcorn sale with Council. The Pack would like to sell the Popcorn at booth sales instead of a door-to-door sale.  Brenda K. will be handling this sale.

The March Pack meeting will be a big push for camping sign-ups. Camp deadlines in order to receive the discounted rates will be set as the April Pack Meeting.  All registrations should be turned in through Jeff M.. The troop would like to be able to keep track of which of our boys go and when.

Bridging Ceremony and March Pack Meeting is scheduled for Friday, March 9, 2001 at 7:30 PM.

Hershey Bears Game is scheduled for Sunday, March 18, 2001 at 6:00 PM.

Scouting for Food is scheduled for Saturday, March 17, 2001 and pick up donations on Saturday, March 24th.

A Cubmaster will be needed for the 2001-2002 year.  Mark M. will be stepping down from this position to help in another capacity.  He would like to begin to have the person filling his position start to learn the ropes for an easy transition.  Contact Mark M. to learn more about this position.

A Committee Chairman will also be needed for the 2001-2002 scouting year, as Terry S. will be moving on to help with Boy Scout Troop 190.

A Service Chairperson is needed for next year. This would involve our Christmas program with the Methodist Home and the Scouting for Food Program.

A Picnic Chairperson is needed to help plan and orchestrate our September 22, 2001, kick-off picnic.  Please see Mr. M. for more information.

A Membership Chairperson is needed for our Back to Scouting Night and Registration campaign.  This position will also be involved in seeing that flyers are distributed through the schools.

Please consider any of these positions.  We depend on the parents of our cubs to keep this wonderful pack going.  These positions would begin in June 2001, but it is not too early to think about serving the pack in any of these capacities.
