| The Games 1) The Staten Island Yankees played the Vermont Expos on August 3, 2001. This was my 5th New York- Penn League game in this, my 1st season of NYPL ball, and my 4th minor league game in August! (See Hudson Valley, Pawtucket, and New Britain.) The occasion was my brothers bachelor party. We left early, with the Yanks up 2-1. They went on to win 3-2. 2) On September 7, 2002, I saw the SI Yanks play the Williamsport Crosscutters. SI won its division in the NYPL, and Williamsport won the wild card. The winner of this series would go on to play in the championship series against either Auburn or Oneonta, each of which won a division. The Yankees were up 1-0 in this best-of-three series. SI scored two in the 2nd. Robinson Cano reached on an error by Williamsport shortstop Taber Lee. Jayson Drobiak walked, and Tommy Rojas doubled to score Cano. Drobiak scored on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Thompson. The Yanks added another run in the 5th on a double by Thompson and a sac fly by Bronson Sardinha. Williamsport came to within one in the 6th. Lee lead off with a double, moved to third when Chaz Lytle reached on an error by Yankees #B Wuillians (thats not a typo) Vasquez, and scored on a passed ball. Lytle scored on a groundout. The Crosscutters tied it in the 8th on a walk by Michael Cockrell and a double by Jorge Cortes. SI came right back with 2 in the bottom of the 8th. With one out, Cano and Drobiak singled. With 1st and 3rd, Drobiak stole 2nd. Cano came home on a wild pitch, and Drobiak scored on a double by Matt Carson. In the 9th, Manuel Mejia walked for Williamsport with one out. Travis Chapman hit into a 5-4-3 double play to give the Yankees the win. SI went on to beat Oneonta in the NYPL Championship Series. |
