The Park Richmond County Banks Ballpark at St. George, home to the Staten Island Yankees, opened in 2001. The entrance has a nautical theme. Once inside, you experience one of the most impressive views Ive seen at a ballpark. Over the outfield wall is New York harbor, with the Manhattan skyline, the Staten Island Ferry and plenty of other ships. When I first attended a game here, there was a great view of the World Trade Center. I believe that was the last time I saw the WTC until the morning of September 11, 2001 on television. Thankfully, there are few ads on the outfield fence, so there are few distractions when one is admiring the view.
The concourse, from which one can see the field, runs from the left field corner to a bit down the 1st base side. Somewhere around 1st, there are steps going down, and theres a walkway and concessions area behind the stands in right.
The mascot is a cow named Scooter. It took me a while to get the connection: Phil Rizzuto, the Scooter, says Holy Cow a lot. Well, I guess whoever thought of it is proud of himself or herself. The mascot does a nice job of making the rounds in the stands. |
