Making Your Living
None need starve in this land. There are many ways of making a living, maybe even becoming wealthy. The following is a list of occupations one may choose on the Character Generation Form, along with a brief description.
Penalties may be assessed for changes of occupation: For example, one does not sign up as a Knight, then the next day, that same character acts like a bard, and the day after that, a Priest, then a Pirate, etc. This creates a lot of unnecessary updating work behind the scenes, and shows lack of committment to your character. Exceptions would be made for physical or mental injury and illness (Example: On quest, the Knight's leg was severed by a shark's teeth. He is now obsolete on the battlefield, but may possess business savvy and be a shopkeeper, or perhaps sedentary work as a Bard would suit his new circumstances.)
The staple profession of any land. Some say fighters lack the discipline it takes to be a Knight, but some Fighters wish to be their "Own Boss", answering to themselves and their own consciences rather than a superior officer within a formal Knighthood. The Fighters of Crystal Shores are no different, often being called upon as a militia to help defend against Ogre attacks. Fighters are needed to be the muscle of Silver Seaport, and in large numbers, say the size of an army, could maybe even stave off the threat of the dragons....with help of course.
More than a glorified fighter, a Knight is one sworn to an Order, his/her services on call for their cause. Knights are the one professional group not penalized by a modifier for using Full Plate, as they have trained with it extensively and are best suited for using it. However, be advised that the warm climate does not make Full Plate comfortable. Sweltering temperatures can be reached causing adverse physical effects, regardless of constitution, including but not limited to heat stroke and death when prolonged wearing occurs.
Mages, also known as Wizards, have the ability to cast spells. The art of spell casting is highly respected in some circles, and highly feared in others. Mages are not by profession, healers, although they can "donate" some of their hp to others in need.(Up to d10 hp). There is much to learn about being a Mage, and in respect to that, before choosing this profession, you are advised to view the Magik of Mages site for full details on Spell Casting and Illusions.
A feared and motley bunch, a mix of
fighter and thief, they are the scourge of the shores, plundering any coastal village or ship unlucky enough not to have enough protection. Relying on speed and brute strength, pirates tend to attack, loot, and escape before
any retaliation can be organized. Ogres are often sought after by human and elven pirates as crew members, as ogres are none too smart and less likely to mutiny. Not all pirates are evil, however: there are some that try to prevent other pirates from attacking the innocent, such as families aboard small, modest vessels, instead targeting the filthily wealthy and none-too-good; and those that send the evil and corrupt down to the bottoms of the oceans. They could be defined as "Vigilante Pirates."
Priests and Priestesses do NOT cast spells. They have PRAYERS, to their God(s) or Goddess(es). Priests and Priestesses also have limited healing abilities, exactly like that of Mages (1x/day), yet instead of relying on Magic to reduce their own HP to give to those in need, they pray to their Gods and use their own bodies to channel and promote healing.
Although rare in the town of Silver Seaport, thieves are the scouts and "money handlers" of Crystal Shores. Often using their stealthy skills to explore the island, they also have been known to swipe goods and money from the vendors, not to mention treasure from pirates. It is dangerous being a thief in this wild land. Thieves are not known to have many friends. How could they? After all, it's rather difficult to maintain friendships when you've got a crew of angry pirates, the entire merchants' quarter, the Silver Seaport Guard, a hungry dragon, and a group of elves trying to prevent you from discovering their village..all banding together in pursuit of you...
A healer's sole purpose is to heal. With his/her talents developing, quality and quantity of the heals develop, meaning: As a healer grows from beginner to sage, they can do more for others with less risk for themselves. Healers do take an hp penalty:
The bards are those that delight us with songs, prose and poetry; record the world's history; can bring tears to even the most grizzled being's eyes with a heartwrenching melody. Bards who have honed their charm skills are very helpful on Quests, as they can sometimes be more effective than the sharpest blade.
Owning and operating a storefront or open-air booth can be a full-time job and a half. Creating and marketing their wares for the public to buy, then creating more to keep up with demand, as well as staying competitively priced with their rival shopkeepers, can be a daunting task. Shopkeepers generally don't quest, primarily because they don't have the time. But don't discount them. There may be a very large weapon behind the counter in case one tries to rob them.
This category is a bit difficult to play but can be accomplished. OOC Consent from both Slave and Master/Mistress is needed in the form of an email sent to the Help Desk: All slaves are owned and their nicknames in the channel will reflect ownership. Example: Mirell{AC} is owned by Sir Carazzi. She wears a steel collar, the { }, with her Owner's initials prominently displayed. ADULT Humans and Elves are capable of being Slaves. If a Slave appears without her (or in a rare instance, his) collar on, or treats an acquaintance of her Master in an insolent fashion, the offended is asked to /msg memoserv *The Slave's Master* *description of incident*, so he can deal with his slave privately, in an appropriate manner. Complete Master and Slave Rules are listed HERE and must be followed PRECISELY, or else both characters may find themselves terminated from the RPG.
Another difficult role to play, limited to Ogres and Dragons, and in extremely limited registrations, humans.. Ogres dining on flesh other than that of animals is seens as a premeditated attack, even though Ogres are not known for intelligence. Dragons however are wild, huge beasts and the occasional cannibalism of a non-animal is almost expected. The rarely seen human cannibal is a complete surprise, and can be inquired about directly by contacting the Help Desk. Cannibals are not allowed store ownership or guild membership, amongst other things.
A unique category, this "Other." Probably opening us up to headaches :P but we're willing to allow it, given the right people and the right circumstances. "Other" entails the player writing a realistic portrayal of a background in the space provided on the Character Generation Page, with a description of what indeed the character does for a living. If there are any problems or questions with the proposal, you will be contacted by staff. "Other" can also mean retired.
