The
Journey
Being long, the journey
has left me many memories, recounted in these pages. You can jump
around in the story from this page, or you can use the links on each
page to follow the story sequentially.

Introduction
Glancing at a few calendars, I realized I could probably do it! And
not only that, but take my time doing so, with very little urging
me back home before September began... more >>
I Prepare
It's a maxim I learned in junior high: "proper preparation prevents
poor performance." Only I wasn't interested in preparing. From
the moment I decided to GO to Sturgis I only wanted to GO; not prepare,
not pack, and certainly not plan... more >>
Starting
Out (August 2)
My first day out started late, but the weather was fairly good, if a
little hot. I decided to take I-80 across to Sturgis and headed out
across the top of New Jersey. Like most trips, my first hundred miles
took forever, lots of stops for this and that... more

Gary's
to Don's (August 3)
We left Gary's bright and early the next morning and he took us a long
the lake a little ways. He was disappointed about the weather (judging
from his post), but I thought it was fine... more
>>
Into
SD (August 4)
On the way to breakfast, we'd passed through lots of cornfields, and
after breakfast was no different. Contrary to the general opinion about
cornfields, I found them not boring exactly, but soothing and actually
quite nice scenery... more >>
We Arrive
(August 5)
Marje and I rolled up there about an hour later, after riding through
some of the simply most beautiful riding of the entire trip! In fact,
Marje and I got to see a herd of buffalo! Not just a couple, mind you,
but an entire HERD... more >>
Devil's
Tower (August 6)
After the morning routine, we all saddled up along with a couple girls
Leo and Neil had met the year before. On what was to be the group's
only day of riding all together, we followed Neil's suggestion and headed
for Devil's Tower... more >>
Hulett
(August 6)
Most of the pleasure of Hulett was in seeing the vast number of motorcycles.
Some of the customs had some very neat work done, while others were
more of an eyesore. To each his own, I guess. The rest of the pleasure
was in watching the few gals who dared to bare... more
>>
Full
Throttle (August 6)
Coasting into Sturgis was like passing through the pages of a catalogue.
Every kind of bike, every kind of vendor, every kind of biker, was represented...

Monuments
(August 7)
The Weather Channel wasn't promising anything good, but as the monuments
were close, we figured we'd have plenty of time before being nailed
by storms... more >>

Black Hills HD
(August 8)
Upon inserting my key, I had a very difficult time turning it. And then
the electrical problems started... more >>
Deadwood
(August 8)
EZ and I did a small bit of gambling and then had lunch, including some
$2 shrimp cocktails (Fremont-style, for all you familiar with LV)... more
>>
Go West
Young Man (August 9)
Saturday morning, knowing that the reservation on the cabin ended the
next day anyway, Nathan and I decided to pack up and head west together...

On To
Las Vegas (August 10, 11)
My hosts wouldn't be in Vegas 'til the late the day after I arrived, so
I wasn't in a huge hurry. Nevertheless, it took about ten hours to get
down to Vegas. The heat was tremendous... more >>
A Tire
Change (August 12)
In hindsight, I should've asked for a different service writer right then
and there -- it would have saved both of us a lot of trouble...

Elsinore
(August 14)
I came up on a little town called Elsinore, Utah. I remember the name
of the town because I thought it odd that someone would name a town after
one of Shakespeare's castles... more >>
Solidly
Midwest (August 15, 16)
The best part was Glenwood Canyon. This portion of I-70 was built long
before I-70 was dreamt of as part of a grand interstate system, with the
governor at the time hoping his little trail would eventually become part
of a national trail... more >>
Mountains
(August 18, 19)
The next day's drive was spectacular! It started with tackling the misty
hills of the Smoky Mountains, which in the morning really are covered
in mist. It was like I'd driven into a painting -- or several of them...

Charleston
(August 19, 20)
My sister is a manager at a little restaurant called 82 Queen, which specializes
in Low County food. We ate some of the best food I've had in years, and
not in the miniscule portions you'll find in NYC restaurants, either.
The portions were real and the taste was unreal!... more
>>
Home
(August 21)
I arrived home on August 21st, nearly a week late. In some ways I didn't
want to be home yet; and in other very real ways I needed to be at home
for my sanity and my health... more >>
