All
postgraduate journalism courses (and the BA medical journalism)
at Harrow have an important online component. All students
create individual websites and contribute to the powerlinks
collaborative research database project.
In semester two
students on both the PG Periodical and the BA medical journalism
form the staff of Westminster News Online a weekly online
local newspaper for the campus community.
In addition PG
Broadcast students have an opportunity to post audio-visual
reports to the Westminster News Online (WNOL)
site and are encourage to write for it, particular for the
features section if they want and if they have time.
Last year the site
was shortlisted for the UK Press Gazette student website of
the year, competiting with sites produced by year-long internet-only
journalism courses taking place at other colleges. In addition
one student who worked on the project was shortlisted for
national online student journalist of the year.
Full details of
the Westminster New Online project are given here
and in the appropriate "click through" section
of semester two of the BA Medical and PG Periodical courses.
There is a wealth
of material about both personal website construction and online
journalism (including audio-visual journalism and "webcasting")
on the web and some of the key links are listed in the right-hand
column of this page.
The online tutorials
at webmonkey (graded as beginners, advanced, etc) are especially
useful for learning the basics of web page making. Webmonkey
also has very useful online, searchable help.
You can download
a free trial copy of the Dreamweaver software package, so
that you can practice and develop your own site anytime on
your own personal computer (the download takes several hours
however).
