DOWNLOAD CENTRE

Use the following links to download FREE various software you need to access some of the resources available on the Coursesite AND free trial versions of media production software you can use to practice print and broadcast production techniques.

Some of the downloads involve waiting for a long time unless you are lucky enough to have access to a BROADBAND internet link. You also have to register in order to get the software. If you do NOT want to get promotional material in your e-mail inbox be careful to tick (or untick) all the appropriate boxes.

THE DOWNLOADS

>>> Microsoft POWERPOINT player. Enables you to run (but not create) Power Point presentations. There are some - but not many - on the site at the moment. Scroll down to DOWNLOAD now and fill in the form.

>>> Real.Com RealPlayer 8 (Basic). Required in order to access most files with sound content. You will need this to access on-line T-line reporting exercises, already available at some colleges and shortly to be provided at University of Westminster. Choose the BASIC player, unless you want to pay more for more advanced features for leisure purposes. Basic is perfectly adequate for the course and also lets you listen to hundreds of radio stations around the world as well as the UK in good quality sound.

>>> CoolEditPro. Our main broadcast sound editing system. It is installed on computers used in the Broadcast studios/newsroom. But you can get a free copy to experiment on by following this link. Warning: long download time. There is also a CoolEdit discussion group here (tips from professionals, etc). There are on-line, interactive training tutorial available once you have downloaded the demonstration programme.

>>> SADiE. The more advanced industry-standard sound editing system, used at Harrow in the second semester for radio documentary work requiring more creative use of sound, mixing with music, etc. Other free demos of sound editing programmes (eg for music editing) can be found by going to this specialist radio production site

>>> Quark Xpress. The main print (newspaper and magazine page) production system. It is installed in the print production area, but you can get a copy to experiment and practice on in your own time. Includes a very useful tutorial. Mac Version available here. PC version available here. Warning: Very long download time. Once the basic demo has been grabbed, there are on-line tutorials and various extension programmes available, such as enhanced or advanced graphics or more complex layout templates. But the basic version is all you need for the course.

>>> Adobe Photoshop. The main picture editing system. It is installed on computers used for print and internet production, but you can get a limited copy, complete with a free tutorial and practice in your own time.  We use this for photojournalism, internet production and print production. You only need to know how to use a fraction of the programme's functions - mainly how to crop, add captions, adjusted brightness and contrast. You can ignore the the thousands of other graphic design functions and the more advanced activities such as photo-montage. Warning: very long download time.

If you know of any other free downloadable programmes which might be of use to the course. If so post a message on the UoW message board by clicking here.
