Asuma's Knives were stabbed on the ground where their shadows were. He explains the first set of kunais were a fake one and were just a diversion. Then he had thrown Asuma's Knives at them and he knew they would dodge it. Thus it had hit their shadows, completing the jutsu. Asuma's Knives are special weapons that absorbs the user's chakra and functions according to the user's jutsu type. Now Shikamaru had stopped Hidan and Kakuzu and time will only tell what will happen to them.
