Day VII Tuesday

 

Materials: Photocopies of data sets, transparencies of arguments and alien hypothesis, argumentation graphic organizer.

 

Warm-up (12 min):

Which argument do you believe, Brigg's argument that the religious conversion lead people to abandon Angkor, or Britannica's arguments that the Thai attacks led people to abandon Angkor.

 

Argument activity (15 min):

Review on the overhead a list of arguments about going out to a party and judge which arguments are most convincing. Discuss what makes some arguments better than others. Give an example about Angkor and an Alien hypothesis to explain how argumentation will relate to the essay.

 

Data set 6 (10 min):

Give students 2 minutes to read vocabulary chart. Ask a student to read out loud the data set. Afterward, ask students to identify main points. Compare what this author claims with what other authors claim. How reliable is this source compared to others?

 

Group Work (30 min)

  1. Divide into groups of 3-4 people after instructions
  2. Fill in the graphic organizer as a group
  3. One graphic organizer will be chosen from each group to assign the grade for all group members (participation points 3)
  4. Any extra time can be used to begin the essay

 

Closure (3 min)

Remind students of essay due Friday, a change from the previous date. Replace desks to their original positions. Remember you are in an argument when you write your essay
