Warm-up (10 min):

Compare your summary with your partner�s and try to agree on what ideas are most important.Write a summary in 25 words or less. Share answers out with class after ten minutes.

Introduction to inquiry (10 min):

Another skill we will learn is the inquiry process. "Why did dinosaurs disappear?" List student hypotheses on board. Make analogy with the scientific method. Explain that each guess is a hypothesis that must be tested with evidence and experiments. Explain that it is the same process that we do in history.

Hook (10 min):

Show five minutes of "Tomb Raider" that was filmed at Angkor Wat. Show photos of Angkor Wat and the quotes from the beginning of the data sets about the greatness of Angkor. Lead up to the inquiry question, "Why was the city of Angkor abandoned?"

Make hypotheses (20 min):

Students list potential answers to the inquiry question on a piece of paper. Tell students to �hare your hypotheses with your partner. Share those hypotheses with the class.Teacher lists hypotheses on the overhead and keeps for later.

Closure (2 min):

Teacher explains that we will spend the next week answering this question about the fall of the city of Angkor and in the end we will write a two-page thesis essay in our journals.
