Calatele Township
Culture and Civilization

One of the areas with a strong historical personality in the Transylvanian Middle Ages was also The Land of Calata, land of waivodes and Romanian nobles, land of peasants who kept the language, faith, tradition and dignity, during grim and bleak times, under the sign of reliance and hope. Calatele township, which today is composed of the villages Calata, Calatele, Dealu Negru, previously known as Valeni-Sat, Finciu and Valeni, represents the heart of The Land of Calata itself.

One of the main institution of the rural community from Calatele township in process of time, that also played a special part in all great events of the human life, was and continues to be the church. On the land of the township there are today five Romanian orthodox churches (Calata, Calatele, Calatele-Padure, Finciu, Finciu-Padure, Valeni).
