"COMBAT" CLASSES





HEAVY COMBAT FOR THE FEMALE PHYSIQUE
A discussion and activity-based class, focusing on the physical differences between male and female fighters, and combat and training techniques to make combat for females less stressful on the body.  For female fighters with in-armor experience, or trainers of female fighters.  Please bring specific problems to the class so we can work out the solutions.

HISTORIC POLE WEAPON TECHNIQUES
Hands-on workshop focusing on pole weapon techniques from period manuscripts. Please bring 6 foot pole weapons or rattan sticks to learn with.  Armor not required, but useful for full speed contact afterwards.

HISTORIC GERMAN LONG SWORD TECHNIQUES
Hands-on workshop focusing on longsword techniques from German manuscripts. Please bring swords or rattan blanks to learn with.  Armor not required, but useful for full speed contact afterwards.

WORKING WITH THE WORRY IN FIGHTING THAT KNIGHT!
Learn how to fight without worry.  We will discuss some basic fighting techniques with Great Weapon, Sword & Shield in a tourney when fighting someone you don't think you can win against.  Learn how to relax and enjoy the fight, win, lose, or draw.

WAR UNIT TACTICS IN THE SCA
We will discuss preparing for and fighting as one cohesive unit within the confines of the SCA.  Class to include training drills, unit composition, commands and control.

ABSOLUTELY BEGINNING CHAIN MAILLE CONSTRUCTION
We will start with the materials needed to make springs, from types of pliers and gauges of wire (examples will be displayed and demonstrated).  Next, we will discuss cutting the links and demonstrate methods to accomplish this feat.  “Four in One” and “Six in One” construction will be demonstrated, and all students will be given a bunch of links to play with. Handouts will be distributed showing the two patterns demonstrated and other patterns.  Instructors will provide wire, cut links, and some pliers. It is suggested that participants bring along 2 pair of pliers for personal use, if they do not wish to wait while sharing the pairs that will be provided for group use and practice.

BASIC ARMOR MAKING
Basic skills needed to get started armoring:  dishing, curling, edge rolling, etc.  Patterns for various pieces will be available to copy.  Students will need to bring posterboard and a pencil to copy patterns.

FIELD HERALDRY
Everything you need to know about field heraldry in the SCA.  From your role in the eric to organizing the field heraldry for a Crown Tournament.  Class handouts include forms, crib sheets and practice after class.

HOW TO RUB YOUR FIGHTER
Students will pair up to practice techniques to relieve battle fatigue.  This is a basic sports injury massage course.  Help ease your fighters aches and pains once they get out of armor.

HOW TO FEED YOUR FIGHTER
This class will focus on the hands-on preparation of some ideal tournament foods, easy to prepare and store and perfect for your hungry fighter, either at a tourney or at war.  All food will be prepared and eaten during the class.

STORY TELLING:  SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE WAR:  How to Tell a “No S**t, There I Was” Story
So people turn away just as you are trying to tell them about the most perfect moment of your life in the SCA. Do not despair! There are actually very few techniques needed in order to tell the biggest battle story of the war. Even students who do not wish to tell their story in class should come prepared to talk about themselves! 2 Hours

A brand new class!  Hear the tales that inspired past generations of squires to tighten their not-yet-red belts and fling themselves fearlessly into the fray. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll never look at a literature textbook the same way again. Learn to use terms like "leoflic lindwiga" correctly! Who the hell were Wiglaf, Estelmo and Ohtar, anyway? What did Prince Valiant have to *do* to Gawain to get knighted?
