RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION
Research and Documentation can be the most difficult aspect of the Arts and Sciences.  This class will aspire to give you the tools necessary to make it one of the most rewarding aspects of the Arts and Sciences.

PAINTING, DRAWING, ETC.

BASIC ILLUMINATION: PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS!
This hands-on workshop will cover materials, painting techniques, and guidelines for creating scrolls.  (Appropriate for those interested in painting pre-prints too!)  Students will paint "portfolio" samples.   Blank Sample Books included. All materials and handouts provided.

INTERMEDIATE ILLUMINATION
This hand-on workshop focuses on shading, highlighting, outlining, and other details which enhance illumination projects and scrolls. Students will paint "portfolio" samples. Blank Sample Books included. All materials and handouts provided.

SCROLL DESIGN & LAYOUT: BASIC AND INTERMEDIATE
Students will design and layout an actual scroll in this hands-on workshop. Will cover Kingdom guidelines and everything necessary to get concepts on paper and ready for paint!   All materials and handouts provided. Students will create "portfolio" samples. Blank Sample Books included. All scribes encouraged to attend.

SCRIPTORIUM
Scribes will work on actual scrolls in various stages. All levels of experience welcome!  Please come for the day or just drop in between classes. Bring portfolios to share (optional).

HERALDIC CONSULTATION
This consultation will offered all day Saturday on a drop in basis.   It gives the opportunity to research your name and or armory with a Caidan College Staff herald.  An ideal time for newcomers to take the advantage of the needed reference books to be available.

HERALDRY FOR YOUTHS
Learn the basics of heraldry!  Design your own device!  Templates and sample charges to copy / trace, paper and wooden shield blanks, and coloring materials will be provided by the instructor.

COOKING / BREWING

COOKING IN MEDIEVAL TIMES:  THE MIDDLE EAST
No experience necessary.  The class will have some basic as well as advanced recipes.  Instructor will provide outline, the recipes we will use, and some additional recipes, as well as some suggested suppliers.  How to make Sweetmeats, including B'stello.  A chicken, egg and almond dish.  Cous cous.  Vegetable stew.  Preserved lemon chicken as well as how to preserve the lemon.  A lamb dish.  There will be plenty for tasting after.

HOW TO FEED YOUR FIGHTER
This class will focus on the hands-on preparation of some ideal tournament foods, easy to prepare and store and perfect for your hungry fighter, either at a tourney or at war.  All food will be prepared and eaten during the class.

BARM BREAD STARTER
Learn to grow yeast the period way, using beer dredges and barm.  Students will grow their own starter.  Instructor will provide take-home containers.

HOW TO GIVE A FEAST FOR 150 WITHOUT KILLING ANYONE
This course covers basic sanitation and feast preparation for the SCA.  Handouts will include temperatures for meats, reheating of pre-prepared foods.  Ways to serve your foods at hot or cold temperatures easily.  Proper ways to cool pre-prepared foods, thawing of meats and pre-prepared foods.  Ordering of foods based on attendance.  Wholesale sources locally and in Los Angeles.  How to feed the vegetarian, the meat and potatoes crowd, as well as the person that likes period food.  Accommodating food allergies.  Basically, how to keep your friends well fed, happy and bug-free.

INTRODUCTION TO MEAD MAKING
Learn how to make mead.  We will cover mead-making  equipment and the importance of sanitation, as well as different styles of mead and its ingredients.  Come help me make some mead!

INTRODUCTION TO LIQUEUR AND CORDIAL MAKING
A very basic class on making tasty goodies.  Will include history.  Instructor will be bringing tools to make one batch of apple cordial and handouts will be provided.

BASIC SOAPMAKING TECHNIQUES: SOAPS FROM LYE AND OILS
Overview of the chemistry of soap, period vs. modern techniques and ingredients, and how to use modern equipment and safety precautions to experiment with soap at home. Includes a hands-on demo where 2  different batches of soap will be produced.  Student will take home a bar of recently-made soap to observe curing at home.

INTRODUCTION TO HERBALS
A very basic class for all those interested in herbal history and use of home remedies.  Includes a review of the history of the herbalist / healer, definitions and instructions for making teas, oils, tinctures, salves, and ointments.  Includes basic precautions and lots of recipe examples.  Some hands-on will be provided, and lots and lots of handouts.

PERFORMANCE ART

STORY TELLING:  SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE WAR:  How to Tell a “No S**t, There I Was” Story
So people turn away just as you are trying to tell them about the most perfect moment of your life in the SCA. Do not despair! There are actually very few techniques needed in order to tell the biggest battle story of the war. Even students who do not wish to tell their story in class should come prepared to talk about themselves! 2 Hours

BAWDY FRENCH FARCE
Based on that popular Starkhafn pastime, called “Cheap Wine and Bad Shakespeare,” where participants are assigned parts to read from a classic play.  This time, though, our selections come from the lewd and scatological farces of medieval France.  Be warned – these plays are not for the faint of heart! Class is open to performers and audience alike. (Pre-registration is appreciated.)

NORSE POETRY AND POETRY WORKSHOP
While the general tone of this class will be directed at Norse Poetry, this workshop will be generalized to help poets or bards or scops from any time period.  This class will discuss the elements of Norse poetry from Meter and Alliterative Patterns to stylistic qualities such as Kennings and Heiti.  While the focus of the class will revolve mostly on the Eddic styles from early in the Viking period and Germanic periods, we will touch briefly on the Skaldic styles that were used from the 11th Century up to the late 13th Century.  The second hour of the class will be a poetry workshop.  This will give the skalds participating the chance to play with some of the forms and imagistic elements of Norse poetry.

COURT HERALDRY
Learn how to organize and conduct a court, from a small Canton affair to a having Royal Presence at your Baronial Event.  What you need to know and be prepared for.  Order of Activity and various ceremonies.

BEGINNING COUNTRY DANCING JUST FOR FUN
Students will learn beginning and intermediate English, RSCDS and ceilidh dances.  This *very active* class is good for experienced and beginning dancers alike. We'll show you the easy way to learn all the necessary steps for all kinds of country dancing, do lots of dances and just have fun!

ADVANCED COUNTRY DANCING JUST FOR FUN
More complex dances building on the figures we learned in the morning. Dances may include Maiden Layne, Prince William, Whirligig, Mairi's Wedding, Bratach Bana, The Wee Cooper O'Fife.

DANCING WITH DRUMMERS
Instruction of basic tribal dance steps and the recognition of basic Eastern drum patterns.  After some practice, this class will be combined with the Drumming for Dancers Class to practice for each other. This is a unique combination that supports better communication between drummers and dancers at events.

DRUMMING WITH DANCERS
Emphasis on drumming knowledge to help enrich the experience of a drum circle for drummers and dancers alike.  No experience necessary.  Percussion instruments will be provided, bring yours if you have any.
