RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION
Research and Documentation can be the most difficult aspect of the Arts and Sciences.  This class will aspire to give you the tools necessary to make it one of the most rewarding aspects of the Arts and Sciences.

METALWORKING

BASIC ARMOR MAKING
Basic skills needed to get started armoring:  dishing, curling, edge rolling, etc.  Patterns for various pieces will be available to copy.  Students will need to bring posterboard and a pencil to copy patterns.

ABSOLUTELY BEGINNING CHAIN MAILLE CONSTRUCTION
We will start with the materials needed to make springs, from types of pliers and gauges of wire (examples will be displayed and demonstrated).  Next, we will discuss cutting the links and demonstrate methods to accomplish this feat.  “Four in One” and “Six in One” construction will be demonstrated, and all students will be given a bunch of links to play with. Handouts will be distributed showing the two patterns demonstrated and other patterns.  Instructors will provide wire, cut links, and some pliers. It is suggested that participants bring along 2 pair of pliers for personal use, if they do not wish to wait while sharing the pairs that will be provided for group use and practice.

GLASSWORKING AND WOODWORKING

INTRODUCTION TO LAMPWORKING / GLASS BEADS
Historical and basic introduction to the art of lampworking and glass bead work in history. Tools and supplies will be on hand. Handouts of step by step instruction, historical background, web site and vendor locations for supplies.

INTERMEDIATE LAMPWORKING / VIKING GLASS BEADS
Planning on entering your glass beads in Pentathlon?  The lecture portion of this class will cover documentation of Viking era beads:  sizes, shapes, colors, and manufacture technique.  The hands-on portion will be geared to improving your skills and making a better bead.  Handouts, tools and supplies will be provided.

INTRODUCTION TO STAINED GLASS:  LEADED AND FOIL
Basic historical introduction to the art of glass, its uses in history, the impact throughout the ages.   Instructor will supply catalogues from suppliers, tools, glass, foil, lead, pattern ideas, flux.

NEEDLEWORK / GARB

DROP SPINDLE FOR YOUTHS
This course covers the basics of wool fiber combing and spinning.  Each student will get to keep their own drop spindle and wool.  Discussion of the history of spinning and the use of fiber in ancient cultures.

BEGINNING SPINNING WOOL
Students will be introduced to many different types and grades of wool, both “in-the-grease” and scrubbed.  Combing (carding) techniques will be practiced to prepare wool for spinning. Students will then learn hands-on how to spin on a Drop Spindle and Spinning Wheel.  Methods for winding yarn into usable balls and plying will also be demonstrated.  For beginners who have never touched wool, as well as experienced spinners who want to learn a few tricks.  Bring any spinning items you may have, but we will have some of each to share.  Instructor will have handouts, spinning wheels, wool, carding combs, and other materials to use.

ABSOLUTELY BEGINNING KNITTING (or How I learned to relax and love my needles)
This class covers the basic stitches, patterns, terminology, and techniques of knitting, and is aimed at the student who has never knitted before or who has tried unsuccessfully to learn.  Knitting-related questions of all types will be answered.  Left handed students welcome. Class will be working with wool yarn.  If you have an allergy to wool, please contact autocrat so that other yarn may be supplied.

CAIDAN CROSS STITCH
Students will use needle and white thread to stitch a pattern of Caidan crosses onto blue fabric.  Students may bring their own needles or thread materials if desired.  Instructor will have limited amount at class.
Prior needlework experience is NOT required.

INTRODUCTION TO MIDDLE EASTERN GARB
We will draw a pattern for a Middle Eastern kaftan and the instructor will construct a kaftan “live” during class.  All students will need to bring a pencil, scissors, and a comfortably fitting shirt or T-Tunic (not the one they are wearing) to aid in pattern design.  Detailed instructions will be distributed and discussed.

KIRTLES AND 14th / 15th CENTURY CLOTHING
Overview of 14th/15th century styles through manuscripts and painting with a detailed discussion of making the fitted foundation dress which many call a cotehardie.  We will also cover overgarments such as the  cote and houppelande and the wide array of sleeve styles available for both.

INTRO TO PATTERN DRAFTING ---CORSETS AND BODICES
This course will walk you through the drafting of basic Elizabethan corset and bodice patterns which can be adapted to accommodate most SCA periods.  We will discuss materials and construction techniques, as well as fitting.  Please bring pencil, eraser, ruler and measuring tape.

PERIOD BOOT WORKSHOP
This class offers a hands-on opportunity to make a period pair of boots.  When finished, students will have finished one prototype boot made of canvas or upholstery material, which they can later take to a shoe repair place to have vibrum soles added.  Students will need to bring their own supplies for this class.  Please click here for materials list and supplies requirements.  Sewing machines will be available.

BASIC SHOEMAKING 101 -- An Introduction to Cordwaining
Class will discuss history, materials, and techniques for making basic footwear.  Patterns will be available for simple turnshoes, Norse latched turnshoes, and ghillies.  Students will learn to size patterns and leave with a pattern made for their feet, if desired.  Class materials will include handouts, patterns, and pattern-making materials.

SHOEMAKING 102 -- Practicum for Introduction to Cordwaining
Class will use skills from Shoemaking 101 to assemble basic set of shoes.  Leather will be available (see fee below) or bring your own.  If providing your own leather, please bring: 5-6 oz.   Class materials will include handouts, patterns, and pattern-making materials.
