PFF President Elected To ASEAN Post April 8, 2007
From: philfootball.info/news040807.html
JOHNNY ROMUALDEZ, president of the Philippine Football Federation
(PFF) was elected a Vice President of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF)
Saturday, March 31, during the AFF Congress held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The white haired 65-year old chief of domestic football's governing
body now occupies two enviable positions in international football federations.
Romualdez is also an executive committee member of the ASIAN Football
Confederation (AFC). He is the first Filipino to have the distinction of
holding two international posts simultaneously.
Asked what his role in both body's would mean for Pinoy football,
Romualdez answered, “I will continue to present the true picture of
football in our country to the leaders of ASEAN and Asian football. I
will try to make them understand and bring to their attention the
different requirements we have from others in the region. For one, unlike
most countries, football is very far from being our national sport”.
A strong performance by the National football team last November
in the ASEAN qualifying tournament in Bacolod and the exemplary showing of
the futsal squad last month in Taipei have garnered accolades from peers
in both international organizations.
The Annual report of the AFF for 2006 published this paragraph,
“The ASEAN Football Championship qualifying round played on a one round
league saw Laos emerge as the top team with 10 points whilst Philippines,
after decades of fruitless endeavour, gained the rare distinction of qualifying
for an international competition on its own merit as the second team with
9 points. The crowd support was fantastic from day one especially when the
host Philippines' increasing prospects of success was obvious as the
tournament progressed and a record attendance of 15,000 was recorded in
their crucial encounters with Cambodia and Brunei DS.”--->PFF Sponsors
When asked to respond to criticism about the PFF decision not to
enter the national team in a coming 2010 World Cup qualifier tournament,
the ex-RP striker replied, “The plans and programs for all our national
football teams need time to mature. We are hoping they will be ready in
due time...but not just yet”.
