In what seems like a few moments, the plane will enter it's final approach into Tegucigalpa, the clouds roll back and Honduras bares herself before your very eyes. Green, laden with dirt roads and farm lands. You will realize you are in another world when you land at the single runway airstrip. When I first looked out the window and saw DC 3 planes, it reminded me of Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. When some of our students and volunteers first enter Honduras and see the poverty, they feel sad, but after a few days you realize, the people are not sad, they are alive and vibrant, the children are just like children anywhere in the world. They use makeshift toys, they play, they are happy. It is our eyes that create an emotion within ourselves, even a sadness, to them this is life. It is at this moment, you are on the road to making a difference with the lives of those you come in contact with. There is a popular saying at the mission, "every problem has its solution," and the problems of Honduras are not daunting when dissected and looked at closely with expert eyes. This is exactly what Mountain Mover's Mission International lives for: the dissection, diagnosis, and the providing of a solution to any problems we encounter. Dealing with the inhabitants or Indios as they are sometime referred to, one by one is problem solving at it's roots. Helping one person at a time. We cannot save the world but we can make a difference while we are here. Honduras is a beautiful country. The smile of a Honduran woman is enough to make anyone look twice, the laugh of a Honduran man is full of joy and with meaning. . The children all say hello to you, the little girls love to talk to the female volunteers, giving them hugs every time they pass. I was always struck by the children remembering the names of volunteers who have long ago returned to their homes. One day I was asked by a child if I knew where Rana was, I was not sure what that meant, so I got my dictionary and looked it up, it means frog. So I proceeded to make frog noises and hop, it turned out they were asking for a volunteer named Rana who had returned home prior to my arrival, but the kids do not forget those who touch their lives. (especially the crazy American doing frog imitations) If you are not convinced on the beauty of Honduras upon the flight in, take a single hike up the side of the one of the mountains or hills to a high spot and gaze upon the perfect ranges sprawled in glory as far as the eye can see; disappearing finally into the cloudy mist of the rainy season. Just walk around Danli, meet everyone you can, smile and say hello, visit the stores, you will never feel unsafe in Danli, especially as you meet people and realize, they really are happy to see you. They are only staring because this is not a tourist area, and foreigners are rare. And this is the reason you are here, and this is the reason the Mission came, we are here because others are not. For those of you that have seen the movie Motorcycle Diaries, you will remember the quote in the begining. "If you let the world change you, you can change the world". Come to Danli and change !!! |
