The house that you sleep in, across from the clinic.

While most eyes that travel through
Honduras overlook the humble town of Danli, this quaint area is the focus
and root of our efforts. The center of the city is marked by paved roads,
colorful signs, and locals on bicycles. Most locals live just outside of the
center of town on dirt roads, yet even there will you find pulperias (corner
stores), billiard halls, and bars enough to keep you entertained on any
given Saturday night. If you don't like to dance, play billiards, or walk
around town, you will by the time you leave. While walking through Danli, if
you are anything but Central American, the locals will most likely greet you
with their best attempt at saying, "bye!" in English. This most likely stems
from the regular greeting in Danli of "adios" when you pass someone on the
street. Besides this small and humorous sentiment, no other English is
spoken in Danli, so grab a couple of Spanish phrasebooks, read up on some
Spanish grammar guides and get cracking on the language. The most interesting and most frequently visited places in town are the internet cafes, the ice cream shop, and the Texaco station which serves up a great pizza and some remarkable steak sandwiches. While making the walk on over to the Texaco station, you pass the futbol (or soccer) fields which are a popular place on Saturdays in Danli. The local futbol team plays mid-afternoon on Saturdays and dresses in white (don't listen to the locals who tell you otherwise because they are most likely doing so to make you look funny). The hospital is a five minute walk from the mission and, as long as you wear blue scrubs and say that you are medical student wishing to volunteer, you can lend a hand, substantially more in depth than you could in the US, anywhere in the hospital. Between brigades, this is where medical students go during the day and, at times, all night. Volunteering for at least a few all night shifts is recommended and an all around great experience and help to the staff at the hospital. If you desire to travel outside of Danli, taking a bus is the way to do it and, if you are slightly more adventurous, stick your thumb out of the side of the road and hitch a ride to wherever you are headed: it's a whole lot cheaper. |
