The Canadian
Lawyers Association for International Human Rights (CLAIHR) was
established to protect human rights internationally through the use of law
and legal institutions. Since its incorporation by University of Ottawa
law graduates in 1992, CLAIHR has worked in partnership with legal and human
rights bodies in over 20 developing countries to analyse laws, institutions
and practices affecting human rights. We contribute by developing and
strengthening laws and institutions that protect human rights, promoting awareness
of human rights issues within the legal community, and supporting lawyers,
legal organizations and others dedicated to achieving human rights in those
countries.
On February 17, 2006, CLAIHR U of O Chapter will be hosting the 2nd Annual Global Generations
Conference. Established last year, the Global Generations
Conference provides excellent opportunities for intellectual bridging between
some of Canada's
brightest legal minds, and also effectively brings together students from
across different universities and professionals together. The aim of the
Global Generations Conference is for students with an interest in
international human rights to have an opportunity to share their research
with their colleagues and the wider human rights community.
Our Keynote opening speech will be delivered by
Major Jean Michel Cambron,
Training Directorate of the Office of the Canadian
Forces Judge Advocate General
He will be presenting on
"Operational Challenges of a Deployed Legal
Advisor: The IHL Dimension."
Please see his biography for
more information.
This year, we have presenters coming from
various law schools, including McGill University, University of
Western Ontario, University of Manitoba,
Queen's University and University
of Ottawa. This
conference was a great success last year and we are certain that this year
will be just as successful if not more so!
This is an all day event (9:00 am to 5:00 pm) held at the University of Ottawa,
Fauteux Hall (FTX) Room 147. The address is 57 Louis Pasteur St. Ottawa K1N 6N5. A
reception will follow from 5- 6 pm. One of our goals this year is to increase
opportunities to connect students with various human rights organizations and
professionals. To help facilitate this, we will also be holding a Public
Interest Information Session in conjunction with the Conference. Please see
