Avalon is a popular type of game known as a Multi-User Dungeon, commonly termed a MUD. It's an online rolplaying game (RPG) with many users who connect via the internet. Many people see MUDs as an internet version of the popular game "Dungeons and Dragons," however MUDs in general, and Avalon in particular, go beyond the usual hack-slash-adventures-stats that D&Ds are composed of.

In fact, you will find no statistical basis for skills in Avalon. No dice rolls will lock your potential in stone for the duration of your character's life. The main driving factor, in Avalon, is your own ability - to learn, interact, improve, and think. Each character is allowed to join a guild, which gives them access to specialist skills, but beyond that, everyone has an even playing field - your advancement is solely hindered or helped by the force of your own actions.

To play Avalon, you will first need to connect to the land. You can do that in several ways:

Telnet - Avalon-rpg.com port 23
Javalon(Avalon's client for beginners to use)
AV Play (a client for beginners that allows more creative options than Javalon - downloads to your computer)
Zmud (advanced client, for experienced MUD players) - Avalon-rpg.com port 23

Once you have connected to the land, you will need to create a new character. Simply type in the name you wish to be known by, and Avalon will lead you through a character creation process. Note that your name should be something fantasy-based, creative and nothing you would see in a chat-room or in pop culture. Good names: Laurana, Aiko, Tristus. Bad names: Sirpeanutbutter, Bob, BrittneySpears.

Once you've created your character, you are set the enter the land. You will find yourself in the middle of a city, which you are a citizen of, until you should choose to leave it for a different homeland. You will quickly find yourself greeted by a sage, eager to help orient you, introduce you to the basic commands, and guide you to the school you should enroll in. Do not spurn his advice, or you may find yourself lost and bereft of aid!
