Klinsmann attends coach licence course organized by DFB

Klinsmann had gone back to school to get his coach's licence in a special crash course organised by the German football federation (DFB) specially for "particularly worthy" internationals. This course opens only to players who have won at least 40 caps and who have played at either a world or a European championship.

The first part of the course is training at the Hennef Sports Academy near Cologne until Friday. It will be completed by two further sessions from 22 May to 9 June and a further three days from 13 to 16 June.

Instruction will include lectures on tactics, sports medicine, motivation and leadership.

Normally participants in the DFB's training system need to attend 560 hours of practical and theoretical instruction to get their coaching licence but that has been more than halved to 240 hours for this special course.

It's a unique idea got off the ground last year by DFB official Gero Bisanz. He put it to Klinsmann who then pushed the idea with his colleagues.

"I think it's a positive idea of the DFB to prepare players as coaches who have had a big influence on German football in the last 10 to 12 years," Klinsmann said.

"We have been thinking about this for a while. It keeps the players integrated in the game because many are making the switch to the media and from there it's easy to only criticise."

Klinsmann captained the FIFA World Stars XI team

Klinsmann was named as captain of a FIFA World Stars XI team to play Australia at the official opening of Sydney's Olympic Stadium today. Before the match, Klinsmann said: "It's a great honour and it will be a big pleasure ... It looks like this will be my last game."

Klinsmann found the net near the end of the first half but was ruled offside and the World Stars team led the first half by 1-0. Australia scored three goals in the second half to win the game by 3-2.

The other football stars featured in this game included: Leonardo (Brazil), Le Tissier (England), Radebe (South Africa), Song (Cameroon), West (Nigeria), Lama (France) and Campos (Mexico).

Klinsmann quitted his role as ambassador for Germany's bid to host 2006 World Cup

"I'm not going to continue (in this World Cup role)," Klinsmann said in an interview published in the weekly paper TZ yesterday. Klinsmann had taken this decision after being refused an official farewell match by the German Football Federation (DFD).

The DFB decided in 1995 not to offer its support for farewell testimonial matches. "We will not make any exceptions, and the same is true for Jurgen," said Franz Beckenbauer, the vice-president of the DFD.

Germany is competing with South Africa and England for hosting the 2006 World Cup.
