Klinsmann's professoinal football club career began in 1978 when he joined Stuttgarter Kickers (a second division club in Germany at that time) as a youth player. His first professional debut came at age 17 and he scored his first professional goal in his second match. Since then, Klinsmann has played for 6 other football clubs: VfB Stuttgart (Germany), Internazionale (Italy), AS Monaco (France), Tottenham Hotspur (England), Bayern Munich (Germany) and Sampdoria (Italy).

He scored the most goals while he was playing for Tottenham Hotspur in the 1994/95 season whereas he played the least games while he was playing for Sampdoria in the 1997/98 season.

Klinsmann stopped to play for professional football club and moved to the US to live with his family since the end of the 1998 World Cup. He announced his decision to retire from professional soccer in January 1999.
