KLINSMANN in BAYERN MUNICH

Club Career | Tottenham Hotspur | Bayern Munich | Sampdoria

After Klinsmann had decided to leave Tottenham, he joined Bayern Munich in his host country. Bayern Munich is one of the most renowned team in Germany and it is famous for its strength and its star players. With the addition of Klinsmann, Bayern Munich should become a more powerful team. Klinsmann played for Bayern Munich for two years during which he secured the UEFA Cup (season 95/96) and the German Bundesliga (season 96/97) for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich

Season 95/96

Klinsmann's performance in the UEFA Cup 95/96 was incredible as he has scored a recorded 15 goals in this competition which, together with the efforts of his teammates including Kahn, Matthaus, Helmer, Babbel, Scholl, Ziege and Papin, easily led Bayern Munich to the UEFA Cup final to face Bordeaux (from France) which had star players like Zidane, Lizarazu, Witschge and Dugarry. At that time, the UEFA Cup final was played in two legs. Thanked to the goals from Helmer and Scholl, Bayern won the first leg at Olympiastadion by 2-0 on 1 May 1996. Two weeks later, Bayern won the away leg by 3-1 in which Klinsmann scored one goal at 78 minutes and Scholl and Kostadinov socred the others. This 5-1 spectacular aggregate victory gave Klinsmann the first trophy in his first year in Bayern.

Although Klinsmann enjoyed a productive year at Bayern, he was disappointed by the unceasing curse with his teammate, Lothar Matthaus who was the captain of Bayern and Klinsmann's predecessor in captainship of Germany. Their dispute was spreaded to the national level and Matthaus was dropped out from Germany Euro 96 squad at the last minute.

Klinsmann and his teammates celebrating the winning of the UEFA Cup

Season 96/97

This season was a special season for Klinsmann because he won his first league champion which completed the collection of medals in his trophy cabinet. After playing the championship winning victory over Stuttgart, Klinsmann said: "[Winning the league] is the thing you dream about doing as a small boy. I'm going to enjoy it for a few days. It is a bit of a happy end."

Klinsmann was of course one of the major contributors for this league champion because he fired 15 goals from 33 games. However, it seemed that the media was not very satisfied with his scoring record and Klinsmann suffered from heavy criticism from the media as a result. In fact, Klinsmann also thought that the team was too defensive under the management of Giovanni Trapattoni and could not provide him with enough support in the front line. Due to all these frustration and pressure, Klinsmann had once failed to control his temper and kicked in an advertising isgn after being substituted during one match.

As a result of all these unhappy experience in the two years, Klinsmann felt that it was time to move again.
