2004 SAMMAMISH SCHOLASTIC CHESS CLASSES

  • Location: Sammamish Chinese Academy, 22818 SE 8th St., Sammamish, WA 98074
  • Eligibility: Any person grades 1-12 interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of chess and the benefits such study provides, such as: increased math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence among many others. (If there are enough students who do not know how the moves are made, a separate class will be started just for them.)
  • Dates: Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31, Feb. 7, 14, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 10, May 1, 8, 15, 22
  • Times: Classes held at 12:15-1:15 pm
  • Instructor: Elliott Neff, National Chess Master
    • 10+ years of experience coaching and teaching chess
    • former WA High School state champion in 1993 (represented WA at the national Denker Tournament of High School Champions twice),
    • has taught hundreds of students from 4 years old to adult
    • has multiple students currently in the top 100 list in the US for their ages, including one in the top 5 for age 9, who took 2nd at the national scholastic elementary championships
    • has coached and been captain for the WA International Scholastic Chess Team multiple years
    • US Open Speed Chess Co-Champion with now Grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura in 2000
    • has competed and won numerous chess competitions both locally and nationally
    • proficient at blindfold chess, often conducting simultaneous blindfold exhibitions (including up to 12 players at one time)
    • helped develop and works with The Chess House, www.thechesshouse.com, an international mail-order, e-commerce, and scholastic chess equipment supplier
    • has defeated several International Master and Grandmaster level chess players in competition
  • Material Covered: Depending upon the level of competency exhibited, the classes generally cover the important basic principles and strategy of how to open a chess game, how to conduct the middle game, how to win (or avoid losing!) in the endgame, as well as many other basic to advanced level tactics, visualization techniques, and tournament experience.
